423916 2006-01-24 04:31:00 Hi ,

Ive got some freinds who video taped a church service on a digital samsung camera and they want me to edit it , i connected the camera to my computer via USB and opened up windows movie maker ( the only software ive got for this ) ...and clicked on capture , but the problem is it says " A video capture device was no detected. Verify that a dvice ios turned on and connected properly, and try again". ..i dont' get it why its not recognising the camera ..I went on the help topic and it said "Make sure your DV device is connected properly to an IEEE 1394 port, and then set the camera mode to play recorded video (often labeled VTR or VCR on a DV" ..i dunno if thats any help but yeah ! ...any suggestions on what i can possibly do ?

thanks a lot fellas !

If so, I would use that, it'll be faster.

423918 2006-01-24 04:50:00 Firewire is not faster for capturing, The process is done in realtime, If the video is 8 minutes long it will take 8 minutes to capture whether its hooked up by USB or Firewire.

The difference is that USB is controller-less meaning you cant operate the camera from within Movie Maker, Instead just hit play on the video camer and select start capture.

The second point is that USB capture is of less quality then Firewire, It looks like a dogs breakfast. This is most likely done as less bandwidth means less data.

The third point is that teh comp won't recorgnise the camera over a USB connection unless the driver is installed, which is provided with teh camera.

No matter how you slice it, You do not want to be using USB (though its not related to the amount of time it takes to capture)

423920 2006-01-24 06:36:00 Whoa, My spelling skills are rubbish.

Anyhow, Yeah, find out the exact model of the camera and track down a driver, the logical place is the manufacturers site if you don't have the install cd.

423921 2006-01-24 06:46:00 If your  video camera has not got firewire you could be wasting your time, If it is mini DV you could find someone with a firewire/ilink equiped video cam and download the tape with it,that's the easy way.
When you get the video in, save it as a DV avi (better quality).

Could you please advise model of digital camera please? Other than that is the camera detected as a mass storage device under WinXP if that is the operating system you use. You appear to be trying to use software without a driver loaded. Very often a camera can be connected via USB but drivers may need to be loaded.

If we can help you to transfer the video from the camera to your hard drive then we can work from there to get it into Windows Movie Maker.

Video is captured, not tranferred, and you use Movie maker to capture the footage.

Well I don't want to argue but from my camera I use it as a mass storage device and can take video then transfer or copy to my hard drive from the 1 Gig card.

I then use other software to process.

Video may well be captured from TV Cards or cameras.

I capture Video from a camera or TVCard then copy.

Presume it is a matter of semantics here maybe?
