423541 2006-01-26 22:17:00 Just a quick tidy-up post on this thread - I took the computer to Infinite Technology in Ngaurange Gorge, Wellington, and they were really good - friendly, non-patronising (often a problem with computer places if you're an old bag, I find - I often resort to getting my daughter to paint her face and come with me to computer places and garages), good communicators, and very reasonable charges. I'd recommend them.

Damn, posted in wrong thread, maybe I am losing it - please ignore, sorry

423542 2006-01-26 23:26:00 Unfortunately the world's top search engine, Google, does unethical things - like giving a better ranking to their advertisers, I've found. Greg (193)
423543 2006-01-26 23:33:00 Doesn't sound unethical to me, I would do the same. Metla (12)

That's what we pay for. There's nothing unethical about it. Would you give better service to a paying customer or a freeloader? If you pay you get better service, end of story.

423546 2006-01-27 03:31:00 Google exists to provide a service. And to give a return to its shareholders, after covering the immense costs of providing the service.

The service is wonderful. I suspect the shareholders are happy.

I don't believe Google gives "higher ranking to advertisers". The first few links given might be in a shaded box of "sponsored links". There is a column to the right of more sponsored links (perhaps sponsored at a lower rate). It's not hard to ignore them. ;)

This is not obtrusive. It's not like having flashing banners and popups. As long as Google can make a profit by keeping the return it gives to those who pay to support it as unoffensive as this, I'll be happy.

It seems that Greg doesn't like this. He doesn't have to use it. It won't cost Google any money if he withdraws his custom. ;)

The sponsored links at the top of the page are no different to the advertisements to the side - it's just that they have a higher proven relevance to the search string. Although the higher up the advertisement (under the 2 sponsored links or the advertisements to the side) then the more the advertiser pays.

423548 2006-01-27 04:09:00 The ones at the right are not "advertisements" . . . they are "sponsored links", too . That's the beauty of Google .

They are all relevant to the query . It would be counterproductive for Google if they weren't . They aren't ranked higher because they pay Google; they are displayed out of true rank order in return for payment . And Google make it clear that this is what they are doing . No problem for me . If the links look relevant to me, I'll look at them . If not, . . .

All of the sponsored links are advertisements - they are called 'Google AdWords' .

I think you misunderstood my point - the 2 sponsored links have the highest proven relevance (proven based on historical click through rate for the selected words, and relevance to the search string) compared to all of the other advertisements shown on the page (i . e . at the top and the side) . The advertisements may or may not be more or less relevant than other results returned by the search (i . e . we agree) . Yes the results are displayed out of order (i . e . the advertisments jump the queue), but the point I was making was the sequencing of the advertisements (both types) is 100% non-random . It's based on relevance to the search string, historical click through rates and the amount the advertiser is prepared to pay for the click . Speaking from experience, it works very nicely for us . Thank you Google!
