424177 2006-01-25 06:59:00 Hi,

I booted up my laptop after about 3 hours since the last session.

The boot sequence failed to detect the hard drive!
I assured the computer it was where it was last time, and tried again.
Same result.

I removed the HD and replaced it again, nothing obvious seen. Still failing to recognise it.

Help

No, the bios isn't seeing it either.
Is it possible for a drive to up and die without any warning whatsoever??

424180 2006-01-25 10:05:00 Possible (slightly) but usually theres warning signs, sounds.
Did you notice recently the harddrive was noisier than usual.. or took longer to boot than normal or anything out-of-the-norm?

Yes. Depending on its age and on its brand. It all depends on which part of the drive dies. If to do with the actual platters or any bits reading/writing then you'll get errors and/or noise but not if its the controller.

424182 2006-01-25 20:24:00 As things go, hard drive replacements for laptops is one of the cheaper components to replace.

Note that some laptop's drive cables are pretty fragile.

If you want to independently check the hard drive, , you may want to invest in a 2.5" IDE adapter and install it in a desktop PC. There's also USB drive enclosures for 2.5" drives, which is always handy.

Should be in the $45 to $60 range.

I'm checking the hd out today on my desktop.

Heres hoping the data is recoverable!
