423950 2006-01-24 07:19:00 Hi.
I had some minidv tapes that have been transfered to dvd. I would now like to edit the film on that dvd and save it to a new dvd.
I know i have already lost some quality by converting minidv to dvd/mpeg2.

So which is the best format for ripping from dvd to the hard drive for editing purposes?
In addition what recommendation on programmes to achieve this.

thanks

423951 2006-01-24 08:25:00 On my Panasonic DV camera, it imports in AVI format, which is not quite lossless, but pretty damn close to it.

Seeing as it's in AVI format (for me anyway) I can edit as much as I want in Virtualdub (www.virtualdub.org) and then convert to DVD from there. This will have the effect of minimal apparent quality loss, and be highly editable.

423952 2006-01-24 10:48:00 AVI is a "container" its not a format that specifies what codec is used or data levels. Metla (12)

I'm aware of that, thanks anyway though. Plenty of alternative containers are VOB, OGM, MP4, MKV, etc...

423955 2006-01-24 22:18:00 So how can i pull a 4.7G video from a dvd and have it on my computer as a 4.7g file in an avi or mpeg "container"? roofus (483)
423956 2006-01-25 05:24:00 Well, simply put, you can't. You can rename the file extension to .MPEG, but that won't be doing anything useful.

A good way to do what you want to do is by using two FREEWARE tools. DGIndex (neuron2.net) and Cuttermaran (www.cuttermaran.de).

First load the video into DGIndex and go 'File' -> 'Save Project and Demux Video'.

Now open Cuttermaran and load the M2V file that DGIndex created, along with the corresponding MPA file. Now select the bits you want to KEEP using the markers, and click 'Add range to cut list' to add a bit. Click 'Cut Audio/Video' to finalise the editing you have made.

Load the video that was created by Cuttermaran into any conventional media player, if it comes out as expected, then proceed to burn (needs no conversion to MPEG2/DVD as it is already DVD-compliant) as Cuttermaran and DGIndex didn't modify the video stream, should be all good.

423957 2006-01-25 07:24:00 You can get plenty of apps that rip DVD to AVI, If DVDShrink doesn't do it then it rips them as a vob, which can be converted into avi with Virtual-Dub mod in 3 or 4 mouse clicks. Metla (12)
423958 2006-01-26 00:25:00 Correct, but to preserve quality, the best thing you can do is try not to convert to AVI. Since AVI does not have the capacity to contain working MPEG1/2 streams, you have to re-encode to do this. Most codecs LOSE information when you re-encode, those that don't, LOSSLESS codecs, require a very large amount of free hard drive space.

Therefore, when you require DVD video output at your end result, you want as little re-encoding or modifying done to your video stream. Using my method NO re-encoding is required and the video is EXACTLY the same quality as before.

Thanks for all your assistance people. I have used Dvd-decrypter to demux the streams from the VOB from there i have been using MPeg video wizard to cut bits out, fade in and out etc. this video wizard tells me it will only re-encode to mpeg on parts of my project that have been edited, in my case this will be a max of 3 second intervals when i fade in and out, which won't be too much of an issue. I am then going to use Tmpgenc dvd author, to author the dvd.

I didn't use cutterman because it seemed to randomly crash on my machine.
and i didn't use DGIndex just because when i explained what you guys were saying to a friend from work he said that DVD-decrypter also does it, which i already had on my PC.
