423627 2006-01-23 08:54:00 Hi all,
My parents computer, a Warehouse Dell Dimension, seems to be having problems. It often hangs when trying to launch a program, for example Outlook Express, and wont respond to anything for quite some time, when everything all of a sudden loads at once. Nothing can be loaded when it's frozen, all that happens is the cursor turns into a cursor with the hour glass for a couple of seconds, then just back to the usual cursor. Can't even Alt-Ctrl-Del.
I have no idea what's causing it, has been doing it on and off for a few months, but lately it's just gotten alot worse.. Have to restart a few times before it works usually. Running Windows XP Home SP2, all up-to-date as far as I know. Also running Norton Internet Security. Have run spyware and adware and virus scans.
Cheers all,
roddy

423628 2006-01-23 17:29:00 If it is still under the coverage of warranty, return it back and either ask for a replacement or refund. Have you tried defragment your hard drive? And CCleaner? Post a HJT log if possible -> www.merijn.org

Cheers :)

423629 2006-01-24 02:32:00 Analysis of C: says no need for defragment. Have run CCleaner, not really much help.

423630 2006-01-24 02:35:00 Run the Dell diagnostics CD ... I'm assuming even the Warehouse Dells come with them. gibler (49)
423631 2006-01-24 03:00:00 Run HJT again, and tick these entries. Tick fix checked. (close browsers first).

These dont have to be running on startup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe - This can be updated here (www.java.com:80)

Uninstall this version first, then download/install from the site above. If you want to update Java.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSBkgdUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Scansoft Shared\SSBkgdUpdate\SSBkgdupdate.exe" -Embedding -boot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DXM6Patch_981116] C:\WINDOWS\p_981116.exe /Q:A

Just been told this belongs to DirectX 6.

423632 2006-01-24 07:32:00 Have run the Dell diagnostics CD, didn't show any errors.

Ticked and fixed the entries, will attach the updated log.

Haven't experienced the hanging again, although it was an intermittent problem so hasn't necessarily gone. Norton Internet Security System tray icon hasn't appeared upon this restart so thats still not fixed.

Here's the fixed log:

While I used to use Norton for security and antivirus I no longer do so.

I now use ZoneAlarm Pro and NOD32.

Suggest you remove all Symantec products via ad remove and replace with Zone Alarm Free and AVG Free.

Download these items before removing the Norton (Symantec) products. Disconnect from the Internet by removing phone cable into dialup modem or unplug your ADSL modem.

Then install the downloaded ones before reconnecting.
