424738 2006-01-28 00:10:00 I'm about to do a whole heap of stuff to flaptop, and it would be far easier for me if i could log in as root, but since i did an full system upgrade not that long ago, i am no longer allowed to log in as root . All this logging in as a user and providing root password as i tweak is getting just a tad tedious.

What might i tweak to re-allow root logins again?

I'm running mepis Linux, allthough as it upgrades using debian sources, it's probably closer to a debian system now.

424739 2006-01-28 00:47:00 Log in normally, then Ctrl/Alt/F2 should open a black screen. Log in as root, then do startx if you want X-Window and a GUI. Graham L (2)
424740 2006-01-28 02:01:00 I logged in as "personthingy", hit Ctrl-Alt-F2, logged in as root, typed startx, and got a bit of a long winded error message... the relevant part is probably:

"Fatal Server error, server is allready active for display 0"

:(

424741 2006-01-28 02:12:00 Ummm .

Let's get mean and evil . Ctrl/Alt/Backspace will kill X-Window . From the black screen that will give you, Alt/F2 should give you another one which will let you login as root . Then "startx" . (You might be able to log out of the first black screen (Ctrl/D) and login to that one as root but it doesn't hurt to leave it running . )

I got where i needed to by using the "text login" option (Ctrl+N) found in the graphical login screen . From text login i could login as root and type "startx" to get root running with a GUI .

I'd still be keen to reconfigure things so that i could log in as root in the same way i log in as a user directly from the graphic log in screen .
