424397 2006-01-28 07:51:00 I'm also this situation and rather than starting a new thread thought I would add to this one. Having had several toshiba's which have never blown smoke I'd be quite happy to get another one but but am having trouble finding any toshiba laptops in online stores with a proper video card in it with 128mb VRAM (or even 64 at a pinch). I did look at the Dell Inspiron 6000 but that looks a bit heavy.

I really would like to get it done for under NZ$2.5k and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for retailers or a particular model to look for (I'm based in Wellington, but Auckland or Dunedin is not that much of a problem).

Thanks in advance :)

424398 2006-02-01 04:52:00 Alrighty then, anybody know anything about Asus laptops?

I've decided to spend my hard earned moolah with Asus- the problem is, their website isn't very clear- they stream you into picking media, work etc, but within each one the A/M/S/V laptops start to blur into one, and apparently they have no table listing the specs of each model together . (I suppose their spec changes frequently, but still!) :(

So, anyone know what the difference is between these classes of laptops?

Where would I get price lists?

And are they more suited to Intel or AMD processors?

I am looking around e . g . pricespy, google, but it doesn't hurt to ask anyway! :)

424399 2006-02-01 07:28:00 Don't know anything about Asus laptops myself but this place (www.qmb.co.nz) lists a lot of detailed specs for its lappies. FoxyMX (5)
424400 2006-02-01 11:15:00 Don't worry, be happy, buy an Asus.

Can't tell you much about them, except that the one we have is awesome and a lot of folks on PressF1 like them a lot too.

424401 2006-02-01 13:34:00 *Large hard drive (60GB) that's fast revving (5400RPM+)
*AMD Turion/ Intel Centrino processor
*min 512 DRAM (but 1-2GB would be better)
*Seperate graphics card
*15" screen with no glare (I don't get the new fancy screens that you can see everything behind you!?)
*Dual layer DVD/ CD burner
*A whole bunch of other stuff I can't think of at this point in time... probably USB ports, TV outs, decent video card, web cam stuff, etc...

With those specs and if you havnt spent your money already it wouldnt hurt to check out www.alienware.com they have some pretty kick@$$ notebooks for sale there.

424402 2006-02-01 20:03:00 Yeah, I had a look at alienware, but a bit outside my budget, and since budget is $2-2 . 5, I'm figuring that really I should at least try to keep to it .

I got the hard sell for a Asus A6Km for $3k, but its AMD (which I know nothing about!) and a stupid shiny screen .

I had a look through www . ascent . co . nz and www . dse . co . nz, and figure I can ignore everything but the A3/A6/A7 and M6- stopped trying to pick one, and am now eliminating everything according to:
*Processor (Pentium M/Centrino or AMD Turion or higher)
*Screen size (15" minimum- why am I gonna buy one with a 12" screen?!)
*Price- if its above $3 . 2k, I ain't looking! :)

Not exactly informed choice, but certainly helped to narrow the field a bit!

Mind you, I had no idea that dse were out of date until checking the Ascent and Asus websites- certainly puts their 'offers' into perspective! :D

424403 2006-02-03 00:36:00 <bump>

Someone's come to me with a make of computer I've not heard of before- Ultra computers, (www.ultra.co.nz). Yes, I know that it gets componentry from the rest of the world, but they also appear to put laptops together too, which is why I'm interested, since the specifications look quite good.

I'm still thinking Asus with less spec for the same money, but then Asus has a really good rep and is an internationally recognised brand... but it never hurts to ask. So, has anyone had any experience or issues with Ultra computers?

And while I'm at it, is there anyone here who can outline for me the differences between the different classes of Asus laptop please? Thanks for your time people! :D

424404 2006-02-07 02:35:00 Just wanted to say that I took the specs for an Asus A6Vm to my local computer shop (who I wanted to buy it from) as well as the DSE price for it, and they said that if I didn't go out and buy it, they would! They were looking at the price for the slightly newer spec (slightly faster processor and I think a 20GB larger HDD), and it would have been about $700 dearer .

Including software (Office for students), its gonna cost about $2300 all up .

Thanks for your help guys!

424405 2006-02-07 19:16:00 I have an IBM thinkpad and it does everything that i throw at it. Ruggered, case, long battery life, fast processing, it even has a light to illuminate the keyboard at night. I am picking that my Thinkpad will still be going when some of these other brands have long since died. Ohh it also has a 15" non refective monitor, unlike many of the other brands that have a screen so reflective, it's like looking into a mirror!! mxpress (6486)
424406 2006-02-07 21:28:00 I'm a fan of two manufacturer's laptops:
* Toshiba Satelite if you're on a budget ($1,200 - $3,700)
* IBM Thinkpads if you have some extra money to spend ($1,300-$4,500)

Personally I like the Pentium "M" in laptops, AMD in desktops.

The Toshiba Satellite A50 Notebook, Pentium M 725, 1.6GHz, 512MB DDR, 40GB, 15" TFT, DVD±RW, WLAN, WinXP Home cost about $1,800.
