424304 2006-01-26 20:00:00 I have had numerous computers over the past twelve years.
I have never had a psu failure or fault.
I have only ever seen one faulty stick of ram, and that was on a brand new comp.
I have never had a motherboard fault. (except a couple caused by myself)

I have had three hard disks fail. All within first twelve months.

AS far as I am concerned the only thing likely to fail is the hard disk.

But then an old computer of mine is still running faultlessly after ten years.

424305 2006-01-26 20:42:00 Todays work log.

1x Packard Bell, 3 years old. Replaced the PSU 1 year ago, Now the ram has failed.

1x Compaq, 3 years old.Dead PSU. Non-standard case and powersupply, Requiring transfer of components into new case.

1x HP, same as compaq list above though the owners are insisting its a broken on/off switch...lmao.

Do you send out thank you notes to the companies involved ? :D
I take it they are all just outside their warranties...

I hate non-standard Power Supplies too... once ya Dell is out of warranty you find that a nomral PSU won't fit as they have the hole in the case to access the power socket is on the wrong side. You could break out the dremel tool I guess.

424310 2006-01-27 08:29:00 I have always favoured powering down when not using, the arguments for hardware reliability being better when left running ceased about 1985 in my view.

There is person not too far from where I live whom has a system (486 DX 100) running MSDOS 6.2x and does not connect to to internet. His hard drive is a Seagate 540 M/B.

Yes that is megabytes as opposed to Gigabytes.

No modem and no Internet.

You are probably right though about powering down.

Personally my computer is on 24/7 for downloading all updates for Win, AntiSpy and et al.

I would have thought that fans or hard drives or PSU units are the only bits in my computer that have moving parts.

We have both heard about motherboards with brown capacitators so they can fail too. I have seen one that did. I removed it from my computer and carried on.

Would not want to bet on what will fail next.

My advice here is to backup or copy data to other media in case of any failure.

MTF or mean time failure on a hard drive can mean anything. Say we have 10,000 hours MTF.

It can last 1 day even.

424311 2006-01-27 08:40:00 I run a clock as a screensaver and it's used as a night light and timekeeper too.

I don't think this monitor has been off ever..well not OFF, but in that limbo stage when the service light alternates from green to yellow. I think the power switch is defective and it took me a full day to get it to hold last time, so I don't ever power it down.

......besides, I like the little lights winking and blinking all the time....lol

Me too except the Lady of my life wants the monitor turned OFF as it keeps her awake. Don't run a screensaver any more. Set to blank the monitor after 1/2 hour.
