424745 2006-01-28 01:49:00 Yay! I have finally gotten both of my computers to connect to each other using a COM Cable!!!! I am connecting a windows 95 computer with a windows xp computer. The only thing is is that I can't seem to access the shared drive on the windows 95 computer from the windows xp computer. Does any one know how to do this???

424746 2006-01-28 02:41:00 Well done. ;)

This will probably be to do with something like the "Workgroup" setting. In w95 it will be "WORKGROUP". I don't know what the default name is in XP, but I think it's different. Someone will know.

424747 2006-01-28 02:52:00 MSHOME I think is XP's default workgroup name.

Sometimes, even if u change this, XP doesnt like it.

So, I would keep XP's on MSHOME.

424750 2006-01-28 07:17:00 Create a folder, and share a folder on each. eg: Downloads on each.

Just dont share the whole hdd. ie C: on both. If u get hacked or something, you'll have probs.

In XP, My Network places. If this isnt on the desktop, right mouse on the desktop / properties / desktop / customise desktop. Tick My network places.

This may or may not work on a com cable. An ethernet cable may be better.

Not too sure how fast the copying of files will be, if this is what you're trying to do. It may not be as fast as using an ethernet cable between both.

424751 2006-01-28 23:21:00 You should be applauded for your minimalist network setup.

I agree with Speedy Gonzales. I'm guessing you're sharing via serial to save some money, but it's almost unheard of today. I haven't seen it done for about six years.

Of course the obvious benefits to using Ethernet

* you can easily add more PCs, printers and network devices.

* in theory a single serial cable with special hardware can run further than a single ethernet cable, but usually a serial cable running a reasonable speed is limited to 1 to 15 meters.

* the fastest typical PC serial speed is 115 Kb/sec versus the slowest Ethernet I know, 2,048 Kb/sec. (I know much higher speeds are possible in both cases)

Assuming your XP PC already has a Ethernet connection, another NIC for your Windows 95 PC is pretty cheap, or even free. Windows 95 NIC driver for the 3Com or Intel chip sets are the easiest to find.

From there, you could use a cross-over cable, ~$14, or a very cheap hub and two cables, ~$35.

Assuming you use TCP/IP, the upgrade possibilities are endless.
