424724 2006-01-27 23:54:00 Yesterday I was copying some files back to a harddrive that had just been re-formatted and a fresh install of windows, after a power cut corrupted the registry.

After returning the harddrive to its own computer and booting windows, the newly copied files were not recognised by windows at all.

I used file scavenger and managed to recover most of the files, however I'm wondering as to whether it's safe to put them back on the harddrive again. Is it possible the harddrive is actually broken??

It's an older seagate 160GB Sata with no SMART so I can't tell if it's been having any particular problems

424725 2006-01-28 00:51:00 Were these files put on the same partition as the Windows? Did you get error messages when looking for the files, or just no files? If the disk was flakey, I'd expect some error messages. Even Windows normally notices. ;) Graham L (2)
424726 2006-01-28 00:58:00 No error messages or anything, the files just couldn't be seen by windows explorer.

It was as if the files were copied but the MFT wasn't updated

424727 2006-01-28 01:16:00 Not "MFT" ... directory. A directory is just a file on the disk. Did you see them being copied, and see them appear in directories on the machine you did the copying on? (It seems they were copied, since you could recover them. But the directories should have been written out to the disk before the OS was shut down and tthe disk removed). Graham L (2)
424728 2006-01-28 01:44:00 The files appeared to copy correctly, They could be seen on the new drive after copying and the whole copy process finished before the computer was shut down.

But when It was booted on the other computer, the folders and contained files were not visible

424729 2006-01-28 01:48:00 Is this a byproduct of installing Windows on a disk on one machine, and using it on another? Isn't Windows XP a bit touchy about that? Though I'd expect it to object a bit more spectacularly than just losing files.

They are all on one partition? Try making sure the BIOS has autodected this disk properly ... it might be "nearly" working on a wrong set of disk information.

424730 2006-01-28 02:10:00 The harddrive was formatted and windows re-installed on the first computer.

I then put it in the second computer and copied files to the drive.

I then put it back into the first computer, booted windows and the newly copied files could not be seen.

The drive is just 1 partition and was used on 2 motherboards with the same sata controller (VT8237) and was used as a single drive (no raid) with everything else set to auto detect.

424732 2006-01-28 02:39:00 is it possible the hard drive is broken ?

YES.............

my suggestion is to goto www.seagate.com and download 'seatools' and run it to diagnose the harddrive...........
