424641 2006-01-27 10:59:00 Hello,

There are so many posts on laptops that this may seem another annoying one. Couldnt find any relevant article in previous versions of PC World Mag so hope people will respond.

I will be buying very soon either Sony (www.sony.co.nz) laptop VGNFS35GP (Centrino 1.8Ghz ,512MB RAM, 15.4inch display, Nvidia GeForce Go 6400, 60Gb hdd(Ultra ATA 100)) OR

Toshiba (www.isd.toshiba.com.au 38359189@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccceaddglelemlicefecekfdffhdfgi.0&PRODOID=70980&CATOID=-8156) Staellite M70 S005 (Centrino 1.8Ghz, 512MB RAM, 80Gb hdd(5400rpm SATA), ATI Mobility Radeon X700 SE 128MB, 15.4inch Display)

Can someone give any opinion as to which one is better overall
Sony Retails for $2599 and Toshiba for $2799.I know Toshiba has been in laptop business for long and Sony seems to be quite new. Which one is generally better in quality wise and Warranty support wise?

Can someone tell me which graphics card/chipset thing from the 2 is better?
I have seen Sony laptop and it looks better and sort of sophisticated compared to Toshiba. Also typing on keypad seems also nice on Sony. Does anyone have experiences with both brands of laptop and which one is more user friendly?

Oh and Yes I saw another post saying toshiba will run Win VISTA fine.
Will the above Sony Laptop be able to run Windows VISTA ok

If someone can give some tips it wil be appreciated. I also posted briefly under another post for laptop purchase but no reply.

Thanks

424642 2006-01-27 11:44:00 If I were you, I wouldn't start thinking of installing Vista on either machine as it is still under the beta stage; therefore, it is still full of bug. Stick to the OS that is provided by the two respective laptops. Could you tell us more on the purpose of getting a laptop? Are you a hardcore gamer? Do you think mobility is very important for you? Or are you a photo / video enthusiast? In my opinion, 60 Gigabyte of hard drive space can be filled up pretty fast. 80 Gig doesn't sound too bad to me. Hope this helps.

Cheers :)

424643 2006-01-27 12:19:00 Well, both laptops look pretty much the same (although the Sony's GPU is definitely better, but you can be sure it'll be a power-hog as well). Have you look at the bundled software that comes with the computer? Because I think the Sony laptop you're talking about is a VAIO = great stuff, also comes with lots of bundled programmes.

You will also find it helpful to tell us what's the function of the laptop - gaming, Company use (and what sort of use) etc.

424645 2006-01-27 22:12:00 Thanks everyone,

I dont want to start installing windows vista. Just asking for future proofing.
I am not a heavy gamer but would play the occasional ones. Dont intend to run games like Doom3 or anything. But will just do normal DVD movies/photo editing.

Can someone tell me what the lifspan is like for the LCD display? Do Toshibas or Sony's Display last long? And which ones are easier to use ergonomics and reliable. I am not to worried about software bundles. I have got my own software that i can install later on.

I did notice sony only lists wireless support 802.11b/g and toshiba has 802.11b/g/a
IS the 'a' standard important. After reading some reviews on google, it said that ATi X700 is better(dedicated 128MB Mem) compared to GeForce Go 6400 as this has very little on board memory and uses system memory to combine to 128MB. Sony specs dont mention clearly if the 128MB is combined or dedicated/on board memory. The reviews seem to just focus on the game performance between the two. Does this memory difference just affect gaming cause if does then i am not too worried

Thanks

424647 2006-01-28 04:23:00 Get the Toshiba.

IMO, Sony has usurped the mantle of the evil empire from Microsoft.

424648 2006-01-28 04:31:00 Thanks for the info,

Just one more thing i picked out from comparing other sony laptop models. This particular one lists :

15.4-inch wide (WXGA: 1280 x 800) TFT colour display (Clear Bright LCD: Single Lamp, Wide View )

Does getting a single Lamp considerably dim the display? I couldnt see the display model for the Sony one as it was not in stock. What will be life span for the lcd display and should i really be concerned with single or dual lamp display. Toshiba does not list specific single/double lamp so cant say what it has.

Thanks

424649 2006-01-28 09:08:00 I think the difference is the image quality

I have a pentium 166mhz laptop from 12 years ago and its still in good shape but the system is unbelievably slow

424650 2006-01-28 09:29:00 Couple of quick things. Don't worry too much about the single or dual lamp on the VAIO - a single lamp will be fine (the dual lamp uses fluorescent tubes at both the top and bottom of the screen for an increase in brightness which is visible but not required for most use) - Sony developed dual lamp technology as part of it's Clear Bright LCD screens and you will not find it implemented in the same way on other notebooks (hence no mention of it on the Toshi). If you can compare the Toshi and Sony in a variety of lighting conditions (outdoor/indoor etc) you will also notice a difference between the screens.
Sony have been making notebooks since 1997 (when they invented the world's first ultra-portable computer) and are considered a very big player internationally - up with Dell, HP and Toshiba. Their notebooks are renowned for build quality as well and this may be a factor esp. if you're buying it for 'mobile' use - try flexing the screen and body of both notebooks (carefully if you don't 'own' them yet!). For example you will feel a big difference between the keyboard on the VAIO and on the Toshi because the VAIO use a metal-backed keyboard rather than the flimsy plastic one found on other brands.
Finally, decide what you want to do with the notebook. The VAIO ships with several hundred dollars worth of media software for editing video, audio and photos if this interests you.
FYI my work involves media creation as well as general email/word/excel etc and I travel a lot (over 110 flights last year) - slightly bias comments as my last two notebooks have been VAIOs (currently an S48GP) but I'd never go back to either an HP or a Toshi now.
Hope this helps.
