424505 2006-01-26 19:55:00 Having the whole morning to myself, I read the fine print on CrapCleaner and it is set to remove "OLD PREFETCH FILES".

Now that got me to wondering...just when does a PREFETCH file become "old"?

Any criteria that is settable? What's the default?

Imo, as soon as it is made, They regenerate as you continue to use your comp but at the very least the fat is trimmed and the one's attributed to programs no longer on your PC will no longer be in residence.

Though, If teh program is clever it could scan the reg for installed apps and only delete the prefetch files for programs that are no longer installed, but i doubt it goes to that much trouble.

424508 2006-01-26 22:16:00 There has been quite a bit of fuss about CCleaner's prefetch data cleaning with a lot of people recommending that it be disabled.

Google (www.google.com) is also full of similar arguments.

424509 2006-01-26 22:32:00 Those people complaining must have the suck computers, how can you measure 100% increase in performance when apps start in seconds?, and Apps that take awhile to load such as video editing programs will still take a toll on the machine when launched, no such luck having a prefetch entry increasing the launch speed by 100%, utter bollucks.

and to top it off any that were there before will be regenerated upon next launch of that app . Sounds like a win-win-win situation to me, especially how CCleaner removes em via a date stamp.

Me thinks the whingers need to find a hobby.

Though if they are running ccleaner so often that if affects their application launch speed everytime they use their comp then they need a good beating with a rubber hose, and a hobby.

424510 2006-01-27 00:08:00 Its quite safe to go to the Prefetch folder and delete them all. They will regenerate. I do mine very few months. It clears out all the dead entries that are no loger used. Pancake (6359)
424511 2006-01-27 00:23:00 Yup, I just added the prefetch folder to options/custom in ccleaner.

It deletes the prefetch files when I click on run cleaner. Saves me doing it manually.

424513 2006-01-27 04:01:00 Prefetch is a Windows XP feature that "remembers" the programs you used last and does a little bit of magic to make the programs load a bit faster next time you fire them up .

Like Metla says, it doesn't make a noticeable difference on fast PCs but on older, slower ones with less RAM it does speed things up a few seconds or so .

Am I a good teacher or what? ;)
