425613 2006-01-31 02:59:00 Hi I have a linsys 5-port switch... do i NEED a router to connect 2 pc's with the same connection? I tried to set it up myself modem > switch > pc1&pc2 . But only one computer could access the internet i could see both computers in the workgroup but only one could get internet. mymoogoescow (9514)
425614 2006-01-31 03:09:00 Where does the internet connection come from?, is it connected to the switch? if so internet should be okay for both, check IP & internet connection setting on LAN SolMiester (139)
425615 2006-01-31 03:22:00 Uhh its cable broadband 3meg cable goes to the modem modem is plugged into the switch and then both computers are plugged into the ports the LED's on the switch are all lit up and link/act is flickering. created a network and joined it for both pc's when i copy down the same TCP/IP properties besides the IP i make one number diff. DNS are the same and everything but only one computer can access the internet.

I can go to start > network places> view workgroup computers and i can see both computers on the network i can even access its files but i cant get a single webpage to load. I tried all the combinations of diff ports in the back of the switch and still no luck. HELP ME plz =D

Linksys tech support told me i need a router. do i really NEED one to make it work?

425616 2006-01-31 03:36:00 A router has directional routing of traffic, a switch is like an intelligent hub, by modem, do you mean the telecom d-link jobbie?.

You are using static addresses because you dont have a router that is delivering DHCP ip addresses to the pc connected to it.
Your workgroup is fine because it isnt accessing the modem...However if 1 pc has access, cant understand why the other does not.
I would check internet options>connection>LAN settings> auto detect is enabled.

Can you ping any external server.

I think the d-link has DHCP, it may be locked to receive requests only from 1 static address, its hard to say without know modem/switch details

425617 2006-01-31 03:46:00 That's not a Telecom one; it's "cable". If Linksys technical support don't think that modem contains a router with DHCP and the other bits and pieces, they are probably right. ;)

It's probably the cheapest model; designed to connect one computer.

You could try the MS "Internet Sharing" thingie. That will let the one which isn't connected get to share the connection of the one which is. But that connected one needs to be turned on for this to work. :D

425618 2006-01-31 03:51:00 im using the linksys etherfast 5-port switch detials here www.linksys.com

and by modem i mean a linksys etherfast cable modem

When i set the TCP/IP settings to auto detect IP I couldnt see the other computer on the network nor access the internet.

425619 2006-01-31 04:10:00 Mymoogoescow, please tell me your running some form of software firewall already on any PC you've connected to the Internet.

Anyhow, what you listed is indeed a switch. Personally unless you're running a DMZ, I would put this in the category of "a bad thing."

Linksys makes a number of cheap firewall / router combos, or even firewall / router / wireless access points. Starting at $110 for a BEFSR41, it's a bargain at twice the price.

Yes you do. Although Graham's suggestion of using Internet Connection Sharing would work using 2 network cards in the pc, so this would be the cheapest option but a router is the more elegant solution.
