425622 2006-01-30 19:30:00 Hi,

I have been trying of late to watch DVDs on my PC and not having much luck! It seems the DVD protection mechanisms prevent it from playing. So I downloaded the trial version of AnyDVD from Slysoft which worked really well until the trial period ended. I am reluctant to pay the USD$39 to register it (even though it is an excellent program) just to watch DVDs. Does anyone know a way around this problem or free software (I have searched and not had any luck)?

Thanks

425623 2006-01-30 20:08:00 What model DVD drive is it and what software are you using to watch DVD's? CYaBro (73)
425624 2006-01-30 21:06:00 VLC Media Player. (www.videolan.org/vlc) It is a simple media player that can also play DVD's with no region encoding.
And it's free :)

Won't help if the DVD drive is set to a different region to the DVD they are trying to play.

True, but VLC bypasses that and CAN play DVD's even if the drive is locked

425628 2006-01-30 23:04:00 The Drive I use is a Samsung TS-H552 Dual Layer 16X DVD Writer.

I don't remember what region code the drive is set to but I know that I have changes left so if it was the wrong one it should ask me to change it. I think its the CSS encoding or antipiracy software on the DVD.

I have tried using WMP and PowerDVD to play them but had no luck, both complain that the TV out on my graphics card is set incorrectly. If thats of any help.

Thanks.

It'll be coz of macrovision. (It's stopping you from playing the DVD, from the video out on the card, to the TV).

Why its complaining. It may be the version of the Nvidia drivers (if you've got a Nvidia based videocard), that's installed.

Update the videocard drivers. Uninstall the drivers that are installed now, before u install the new drivers.

I will put that to the test tonight and let you know how I get on.
My dad's laptop DVD drive has been locked to Region 1.
I have looked for a firmware update but there isn't one.
AnyDVD and DVD Region + CSS Free don't work with Mat****a drives, which this one is.
