425065 2006-01-29 02:15:00 Alright so I got this empty folder on my computer, no harm being done, but I need to remove it...I'm cleaning up my harddrive and its annoying. I've tried almost everything to delete this stupid thing...using the traditional methods (safe mode, dragging the folder to the recycle bin, deleting the file normally and even using the program moveonboot) and trying to take ownership of the file, as well as using command prompt. Nothing has worked and I'm about to give up! I created the folder and must have deleted the insides and now I can't totally remove the darn thing!

This is what it looks like.

Local disk D:
I have a folder called "NewFolder"
within this folder is a folder called "NewFolder2"
and within this folder I have two folders called "1" and "2"

ALL FOLDERS ARE EMPTY OF ALL FILES!

How on earth can i delete the folder "NewFolder", which contains all the empty subfolders...I need desperate help and am NOT a computer expert...so maybe the command prompt method I used didn't work because of inexperience. PLEASE HELP ME OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

425066 2006-01-29 02:22:00 In DOS, the directory delete command is "RD" (for "remove directory") . It will not work if there is anything in the directory, so it has to be used "bottom up" .

DELTREE should work, too . . . it will delete a directory and everything under it . That could be given at the top level (D:\) .

Just by the way, "HELPME . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" doesn't make us answer quicker . Some people might feel provoked to answer slower . ;)

425067 2006-01-29 02:22:00 Can you go inside and delete each empty folder first?
D:\NewFolder\NewFolder2\ then delete folders 1 and 2 then
D:\NewFolder\ then delete NewFolder2 then
D:\ then delete NewFolder

425068 2006-01-29 02:27:00 No, that method won't work...I tried it already. Thanks anyways though. I'm sorry for shouting and offending anyone, I'm just really frustrated with this folder.

Graham L, how would I go about deleting this folder then? Can you help walk me through it?

Thanks

425069 2006-01-29 02:37:00 Well, the delete (del) command is for files, not directories. (As a pedant, I have to say that a directory is a file, but it is a special sort of file and it has its own command to remove it  ).

Have you tried deltree? With a "D:\" prompt, deltree /y newfolder should work. (The "/y" just saves you answering an "are you sure" sort of question. You're sure. :D

425070 2006-01-29 02:57:00 Download Move on boot from here (www.softwarepatch.com) it should do the trick Overdrive_5000 (4950)
425071 2006-01-29 03:03:00 I have already tried moveonboot and it has not worked .

Graham L, I tried what you said . First I closed all programs running and opened command prompt . I first typed in D: to direct myself to the D: directory where the folder is located . I then typed in deltree /y NewFolder and hit enter . This is the message that was displayed . . . 'deltree' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file .

What should I do now?

Thanks

425072 2006-01-29 03:40:00 I presume your os is xp
boot using f8 key (safe boot)
select command prompt ( cant remember exact lanuage used in that menu area)
then type in

del new folder\newfolder1\*.* ( deletes files within directory)
rd /s new folder ( Xp's deltree type rd /? at cmd prompt for more info)

It maybe a good idea to virus scan your system too

you only need

rd /s new folder

that should delete everything below (inclusive of the parent)

425074 2006-01-29 05:48:00 I'm guessing you've already run chkdsk on your drive

"How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP"
support.microsoft.com

You might want to try this also
Start... Run... Cmd
d:
cd\
attrib -s -h -r NewFolder /s /d
rd /s NewFolder
exit
