425202 2006-01-31 20:13:00 again........

can you share files between pc's on the network?

you need to PROVE that the network is working, not just assume its working. no amount of checking on the pc is going to prove the networking works, you need to do a real world test.

Do you have a suggestion how?
All I know is:
1. My NIC passed pc-doctor's test.
2. Another pc connects the net using the same line and the same modem/router
What else can I test?

425203 2006-01-31 20:20:00 if you are keen you could either partition yr drive, or using another, install a clean version of windoze then try the router. this would tell you if there is some software prob, or if it still wont go there will be some hardware prob with the pc ?.........an install only takes 40- min... drcspy (146)
425204 2006-01-31 20:34:00 It would be quicker to download something like DSL Linux (LiveCD) and run that than repartition and potentially screw up more.

Basically, from what we can gather is:
You have two laptops
One works fine connecting to the 'net thru this ADSL Modem
The second one doesnt

Are the two laptops possible to be networked?

Apologies if the name has been mentioned, but what Firewall software _are_ you using? Ive mostly just skimmed this thread, missing all the dull/boring/repeatative posts :p

Basically, PC Doctor probably wont have sent any data across your LAN Card or it would have failed (being as there is no IP Address being received), but rather just tested the loopback interface by pinging 127.0.0.1 :-/

IF youve got adsl it might be quicker.......

possible yes.....but not that likely......and certainly definitive........however your linux idea would also be definitive test of hardware......

425206 2006-01-31 20:52:00 Mmmm... but ADSL works on the other laptop remember, so its a faster/safer choice ;) Chilling_Silence (9)

you have another pc connected to the same network the faulty pc is on, setup windows fileshareing so you can share files between them.
if you know what a tcp/ip stack is then it should be a peice of cake for you.

it seems odd that you can copy transfer reg settings and know what tcp/ip stack is etc but have no idea what networking is.......very werid

I don't have another pc connected to the same network. It's an alternative pc which I connect using ADSL to the internet.

Repartition and installing a 2nd winxp os is exactly the step I plan next. Since my hd is heavily loaded, I'm planining first copying as much data as possible to dvd media, then, repartition, install and\test.
Any suggestions or reservations about this idea?

425211 2006-02-01 05:49:00 One thing you could try is to fix the speed of you ethernet.

You can normaly do this on the advanced tab of your network cards hardware properties.

Try locking it to 10MBs half duplex then work upwards till happyness.

Some cards / chipsets have problems with auto speed sync.
