425233 2006-01-31 04:27:00 Start - Run - type "SFC /scannow" into the Run box and press Enter

Do not type the ""

Be sure to put a space between "SFC" and " /scannow".

The command is case InSenSiTive, upper or lower case is just fine.

A dialog box will appear and give progress, can take several minutes to complete. When finished it just "disappears", you may or may not be asked for your Windows CD in the process. A reboot may help at the end, but is undocumented as being needed.

support.microsoft.com

"system file check" (with quotes) to Google will give you plenty of useful information Cicero.

425234 2006-01-31 04:29:00 How would you do that?
Entering System File Check into help and support only brings up signature file check!System File Checker (sfc) (www.microsoft.com). You enter the command into the Run field (Start > Run).

[Edit: too slow, I see GF has bounded in ahead of me. :p]

425236 2006-01-31 05:25:00 Thank you GF and J.

Please note that you will have to have access to your operating system install files to do this. A recovery CD will not cut it.

If you installed off a full WinXPPro cd with SP2 slipstreamed and had C: D: and E: partions on your hard drive your CD that you install from is likely to be Drive F:

If afterward you change the CDRom Drive to X: Y: W: etc as I do then there is a fair chance that "SFC /scannow" will not work. Or alternatively if asked for your WinXP CD it will not be found where expected.

There is a reg fix for this which if you need I can post for you if you happen to need it.

Good advice from Godfather and Jen. I just posted to clarify a bit.

The occasion never arose when running,so left well alone.

In all cases that I have encountered where a recovery CD is the supplied version, there is a copy of all CAB files installed to the hard drive and it never asks for the CD.
