425440 2006-01-29 01:35:00 If you've got a System Recover CD for that computer, it might not work, because you have changed the motherboard. and it might be tied to the one the manufacturer installed. It will almost certainly wipe the hard disk if it does work ... system recovery CDs usually do that. :(

If the version on the hard disk disk worked, it was presumably legal. If you haven't got the registration number (on a sticker on the side of the case?) you have problems.
on what "case" would i find the registration #, the HD case? or on something else?

If you can find a full XP disk (AC MIcrosoft one, not a manufacturers system recovery one) you should be able to do a System Repair, as Cyabro suggested.
^^how much does that cost^^

425441 2006-01-29 01:38:00 The sticker should be on the outside of the computer case. Removing it destroys it.

You can't officially buy a Windows XP CD. You buy a licence for Windows XP and the CD is thrown in.

425442 2006-01-29 01:44:00 i think i found it does it look something like this (these are random #s and letters, not real reg): KT3P5-D458K-KIN2R-564HK-TI517
and if so, can i do anything with that w/o a WinXP CD or can i somehow get a CD using that reg code?

425445 2006-01-29 01:49:00 Right . That's the registration code . You have a licence and a legal system . If you can borrow a CD from someone, you can use that . If you can get a copy (a "backup" ;)) of one, you can use that, giving it your registration code when it asks for it .

But while I think of it, use the "Edit" button, and change that code . Quickly, . before Google grabs it and it's available for the world to use . :D . . . Ooops, just realised that you were smart enough to not give the proper one .

well, thx a lot for all the help

now i just have to procure me a WinXP CD, that's gonna be hard down here in GA, too many rednecks not enough computer ppl

oh, does it have to be a Home Edition? (that's what i had b4)
chip4 (9715)
425447 2006-01-29 02:02:00 I strongly suspect it would need to be a Home Edition. I suppose you got your new motherboard mailorder, so you can't ask the nice man at the shop. :D

You could try eBay. You don't have to have much faith in the vendor selling only one copy .. you have a registration code, and that's what counts.
