425599 2006-01-31 03:33:00 i have an aging pII 266 with 64mb of ram, i cant put XP on it because i dont have a cd for it. i have a ME cd but it is fairly scratched and i am terrified of losing anything if it wont install. So i thought i would do a test by copying the cd contents to the HDD,all went well until we got to the d:\win9x\win_16.cab and so forth. i get the error data redunacy and it halts. i dont know anyone who owns another ME cd. can i copy the files that cant be read from a 98 or 95 cd? or NT 4.0? aidanmaz (7180)
425600 2006-01-31 04:17:00 You'd be much better off with Windows 98SE, but if you're stuck with ME try polishing the CD.
You can't mix operating system files, well some you can, but not as much as you would need (afaik).

425601 2006-01-31 04:20:00 You can mix operating system files. But the consequences aren't always nice. :D Graham L (2)
425602 2006-01-31 05:38:00 Do you have a Win98SE CD?
If so then use that.

425603 2006-01-31 05:50:00 agree 98se is a much better idea...

However if you have your own legal copy of ME and want to use this then I'd suggest you make a NEW copy of the ME CD and use this - the CD is not copy protected . You'll need your product key etc

Do you or a friend have a CD/ DVD burner ?

425606 2006-01-31 06:38:00 just go buy someones old 98se or copy a mates winME. far easier than mucking around replaceing the corrupt files. tweak'e (69)

425608 2006-01-31 07:35:00 Video shops offer a CD/DVD polishing service. I used it to fix a scratched W2K OS CD and it was fine afterwards, looked just like new. I think it was Video-Ezy but there are branches all over NZ anyway so Google it or phone your local video shop. They will know, they don't just throw out scratched DVDs.

Cost was minimal, just a five or so dollars and it only took a couple of days.

Cheers
