425486 2006-01-30 11:02:00 For some reason tonight, my windows xp (home edition) now refuses to recognise any applications or exe files. It tries to look to the net or asks me for what program i use to start them up with.

Each program i do try to open starts up Bitlord and tries to make it into a torrent!!?

I have tried to reinstall windows xp, but i can't run the set up file in windows and when i run it on bootup it says i have no active hard drives.

It is very frustrating

Any suggestions please?

425487 2006-01-30 11:22:00 Usual advice in a situation like this is to do a full anti-virus scan with an updated scanner. If that doesn't show anything up, download, install and run Hijackthis, save the readout to a log file and copy and post it here. If there's anything shown up there folks here can help you analyse it. Greg (193)
425488 2006-01-30 17:16:00 Seeing as you cannot run any program, try downloading the zip file for re-associating your exe's from here (www.dougknox.com). Note the comment on how to launch regedit at the top if you have problems.

Once you have exe's working again, then try scanning your machine for viruses or other malware.

You can also find further information on You receive an error message when you try to start a program that has an .exe file name extension (support.microsoft.com) from Microsoft.

425490 2006-01-30 21:30:00 Check your file type associations. Attempt to get into explorer and go Tools>Folder Options>File Types and check what exe is set to. joshjnz (7844)
425491 2006-01-30 23:56:00 Thanks everyone

very frustrating.

I used the import in registry to reset exe's and now at least i can run programs. it seems all but a few applications are now linked to Itunes.exe.

I will will restore batch file to registry and try again, else, i will repoint all shortcuts to the various exe files...could be a long job.

Weird how all application reattach to a single exe.

Lots of thanks for the help so far, very frustrating!

425492 2006-01-31 00:12:00 I would post a hijackthis (www.spywareinfo.com) log. It sounds like something has screwed things up. Speedy Gonzales (78)

Hi there

Initially it was bitlord that had hijecked everything, then i deleted it after fixing the exe registry problem (thanks to the kind help above) - then a repointed the itunes start menu icon to the exe file and it works fine...but now all the other apps point to itunes too.

$#$%#$

Will try again tonight, esp with Hijack - looks like a good app.
