426232 2006-02-02 04:02:00 I bought a Canon iP4200 to go with my new Epson laser and had an out-of-body experience while setting it up . (Out of body sounds so much nicer than out of my mind :D)

Having learned by bitter experience that one should at least attempt to follow the manufacturer's instructions, I followed the prescribed sequence:

1) Plug it in (easy peasy) .

2) Turn it on (only slight hesitation here) .

3) Open top cover and paper output tray, pull down inner cover . (What the . . . . . . . . . . ? What inner cover?)

I couldn't find any inner cover, so I pressed on with installing the print-head, then the ink tanks, then whammo! -there it was again at Step 6: "Put back the inner cover and close the top cover" .

Nowhere in the set up guide could I find anything to say what this "inner cover" was .

I finally found it some time later whil browsing the (separate) guide for printing CDs . It is part of the feed arrangements for the CD printing tray, and it is briefly (just once) called the "inner cover" before changing its name to the "CD-R Tray Feeder" .

For the life of me I can't see any connection between this cover/tray-feeder and the process of installing the print head or ink tanks . It does raise a metal bar a few mm closer to the printheads but I guess that is necessary for printing to CDs .

Can anybody explain the significance of this "inner cover" to the print head/ink tank installation? I'd hate to think that I had damaged the whole thing in some way .

My best guess is that it is a precaution against damage by those who install print heads with their feet, or perhaps use a mallet to seat the ink cartridges .

Any iP4200 or iP5200 owners out there who can enlighten me?

Cheers

426234 2006-02-02 07:15:00 i got the old man a ip5200 and didn't get any message like that on install. however i didn't follow the manual ;)

is the message just part of the instructions or one activated from the printer?

just make sure you got all the pakageing, tape etc off.

426235 2006-02-02 08:56:00 the inner cover is just under the top cover - when you want to print cds, pull the inner cover down to slot the cd tray in. it's just to allow easier access when loading the inks. i'd just installed another one the other day (probably 20 recently).- setup disk first, while it's doing that - load up the inks etc easy peasy. connect the usb cable etc when asked - nice & easy & only half the crap of HP printers - no sneaky updates etc. quarry (252)

426239 2006-02-02 18:11:00 OK Beet,now I know what you think.
I have one B.
Can only say that instruction always make it sound harder than it is.
If I don't get it,I just press on and hope,so far it is working well.
That bottom tray thing had me puzzled for a while.
I have no recollection of the part you mention, sorry.

426240 2006-02-02 21:38:00 Daft, blind and/or stupid I may be Greg, but I've never fancied HP Inkjets . Monochrome lasers yes, I'm on my second HP, but the iP4200 is my fourth Canon inkjet and I have been satisfied with all of them .

My first was a BJC600 in 1994 ($1750 ex-GST trade, compare that to $780 ex GST for a colour laser) . I went to the BJC 620 then the S750, each time upgrading for better print quality .

For me the decision has always been simple, Canon reliability and the bonus of individual ink tanks made them the best choice for longevity and running costs .

Incidentally, HP didn't even get on the short list for colour lasers after BBs review in PCW!

Cheers
