425638 2006-01-31 04:21:00 Bought myself a Philips DVDR560H model and am able to copy a lot of family archives from VCR to DVD as well as create slide shows out of my hundreds of slides of family memories.
Problem is I can only record on DVD+R or DVD+RW formats.
Question: Is there any kind of software programme that will convert from one format to another during a copying process ?

425640 2006-01-31 04:53:00 IIRC most burners burn to a universal DVD-ROM booktype, therefore the only difference will be in the structure of the disc and not the content. Almost all DVD players will player either format. Haze (3028)

DVD+ works fine for me on stand-alone players

425642 2006-01-31 06:23:00 Its not that you need any special software, the burning software (such as Nero) doesn't care what the format is. The problem is the writer. Your Philips will only write +r or +rw disks, as will a lot of the stand-alone recorders. The important thing is what your dvd writer in your PC will write to. Most of the newer ones will write to +r/rw or -r/rw with no trouble.
I use +rw disks in my dvd VCR (as that is all it will write to) and then if I am happy with the result, or once I have edited the contents, copy or write the finished disk to the (usually) cheaper -r disks. It seems to work fine. I use Nero to write the disks and Cyberlink Power director to edit, both programs came with my DSE dvd writer.

Maybe I hav'nt made myself clear. What I want to do is copy a VCR tape onto the hard drive in the DVD and then copy it to a DVD Disc. I did this but when my daughter tried to play it , it would not play on her DVD saying it was an incompatible disc. So it seems to me that some peoples DVD's wont play certain formats.
What I wanted to know is: Is there any software available which will allow one to change the format so that it will play in my daughters machine. The Philips DVD that I purchased will only RECORD to DVD+R or DVD+RW formats and if this is not playable on other peoples DVD PLAYERS then I am goosed.

Sorry don"t really know this. I have a friend whose DVD will only accept DVD-R discs but I don't know what my daughters will accept. I am getting her to send up her manual. It does appear to me though that some PLAYERS will not play all formats And I was wondering if there was some sort of conversion software available.

The problem is not about converting between formats. The discs are physically different. You don't put any old disc in the burner and select the format you want to use, you simply select burn and the software burns in the format of the disc.

It seems that your problem is that to be compatabile on most DVD players, the recorded disc needs to be "Finalized", or "Made Compatable". Your DVD recorder should, 'WILL' have this feature; probably hidden at the bottom of a menu, because finalizing a disc will make it PERMANANTLY read only.

Put the disc back in the DVD recorder where you made it and select "Finalize". When the process is finished the disc will be playable on almoast all DVD players, and devices like Playstation.
