425648 2006-02-01 17:41:00 heaton, which program came with your Philips DVD burner?
Often it's Nero or similar
As mentioned by others , have you tried different brands of recordable media and are you sure you have finalised/ finished the disc ?
To make discs that play in stand alone players [ vs computer drives ] I'd avoid any RW discs unless you know the player supports them
No way are you goosed
You don't need conversion software if your burner supports burning to DVD + AND DVD-
A quick google suggests that your burner is a stand alone DVD/ harddrive unit, and not a computer based DVD unit - is this correct?

It Is NOT a Philips BURNER. It is a DVD player/recorder.
I think that the gents who made me aware of the need to FINALISE the discs have hit the nail on the head and I can't wait to put this into practice. Thank you all for you help I certainly have learnt a lot. This certainly is a great forum for problem solving and often it is some simple little thing that one has to do. Thanks again all.

425650 2006-02-02 04:57:00 Sorry heaton,
I did misunderstand you. You definitely need to finalise the disk or use the "Make Compatible" option otherwise, even if it does play in another machine, you will lose any editing or chapter settings.

425651 2006-02-05 09:30:00 Most of the philips dvd players and recorders do play dvd+r/rw but if you want to play other formats you must ensure you have finalised the disc to play in other players.
I have a question about my dvd725h Philips harddrive recorder. I bought this recorder on trademe last week and it works fine nothing wrong with it but i noticed when i plugged it in and reset it to the factory settings the display came up and told me its a 80gb harddrive this infact is not true i took the lid off it and had a look at the harddrive and it says its 160gb which the owner told me it was, will this effect the recording time bye it telling me its 80gigs when its not.

425652 2006-02-05 10:18:00 The 'finalise' option/necessity is the bugbear (if you want to call it that) of the +R format.

The -R type was designed/created to avoid that need.

I've found most recent DVD players will play both + and - types.

My Panasonic +R HDDVD machine does all the VCR to DVD stuff (via the HDD) but I got caught with the finalise setting at first...

425653 2006-02-05 10:22:00 Balls up in previous post! (late in the day :) )
My Panasonic does -R not +R
The -R needs finalising.
+R doesn't

I did have Philips HDDDVD machine but it spent more time in repair than functioning; gave it back and swapped it for the Panasonic.
