427457 2006-02-05 07:39:00 On 50% of occasions when I place a CD (data or audio) into my CD/DVD drive, it causes the computer to lockup - ie, mouse, keyboard and keypad are locked, and I have no option but to switch off and restart the computer. I'm running XP on a HP Pavilion 1580a. Can anyone help? Phil Phil (717)
427458 2006-02-05 08:07:00 Hello there. Have you checked your computer for malwares? Does this trouble you too when you try running the CD Drive on another computer? What model is your CD DVD drive?

Cheers :)

Optical drives can be a pain, but then it might be a software issue.

First make sure that it isn't one or two bad discs that are causing the problem every time. If you can rule that out, then try deleting the drive in system propreties. Windows key+pause/break, hardware tab, device manager, DVD/CD-ROM drives; then restart the computer.

If that doesn't do it consider the software you are using to read/write the discs, is it reliable? is it corupted? If it is corupted, then reinstaling it should fix the problem.

Then again it might be a conflict with some other software that is trying to use the same resources at the same time.
try closing any progeam that might conceivably be conflicting, Media - players for example - and see if that helps.

If you are feeling confused right now, that is just normal. We have all been there. :)
