427332 2006-02-05 06:03:00 Hi there everyone

I have saved up for ages and am upgrading from a Compaq EVO 1.5 P4 to a decent gaming computer.

my "desired" specs are:

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 630 3.0GHz Socket 775 x1

MotherBoard: Gigabyte GA-8N-SLI Royal nForce4 SLI Intel Edition x1

Memory: 512MB DDR2-533 PC4200 SDRAM x1

Hard Drive: Seagate 80GB 7200rpm Serial ATA x1

Graphics Card: GeForce 6600 GT 256MB PCI Express x1

I already have a case and a monitor so i do not need to worry about that.

what i want to know is, Will this play any game i throw at it for a long time, and is there a bit of room for upgrading - i dont want to get a completly new computer for a long time :waughh:

oh and my budget is about $1500 (give or take $100)

thanks in advance

427333 2006-02-05 06:14:00 Why Intel?, that cpu is spanked sideways by the AMD, and the nForce4 for Intel performs subpar as well.

For $1500 you could expect far better perfomance and components.

Look at this as an example.

427334 2006-02-05 06:28:00 Recently made up a gaming computer for a mate with a socket 939 Athlon 64 and a Gigabyte n-Force 4 board [ not SLI or anything like that] and a similar PCIe-16 video card and it is great , quiet and quick. I would suggest a much larger hard-drive perhaps with NCQ and at least 1 G of ram - I installed 2x 512 sticks in dual channel configuration in this machine . All up cost was well under $1500 and this included a new case , quality power supply [ are you sure your's will be up to the job? ] and a dual layer DVD writer ... oh and Window$ KatiMike (242)
427335 2006-02-05 06:40:00 yeah - i plan to upgrade to a gig of ram or more ASAP.

about switching to amd - yes i may do that after seeing your comments but am undecided as yet.

427336 2006-02-05 06:50:00 about switching to amd - yes i may do that after seeing your comments but am undecided as yet. Take it from me, I WAS running on Pentiums all my life, then I saw that AMD was better, I ended up getting a 4400+ X2 as you can probably see below :D

Anyway, as soon as I realised when I got my new PC just how much faster it was, I was sure I had made the right decision between AMD and Intel here (reviews.cnet.com) is a review between the dual cores from both, even though you might not be looking at dual core, actually it might be a little out of your buget :p but I though I would put this in because it was what changed me

427337 2006-02-05 07:04:00 At least a gig of ram.
And,of course, an AMD CPU

427338 2006-02-05 07:31:00 Do you need a new Power Supply too? You'll need a good quality one or otherwise your gaming experience will consist of freeze...hang...lockup...

Gaming = AMD these days....

Double the memory and Hard Drive.

Hope your monitor is good .. nothing is funnier than seeing people who have a fast PC and a terrible screen.

NO.
It never does even if you got the latest greatest.
You need to chnage:
The CPU to AMD - that will make it cheaper too.
Add more ram.
Get the BEST graphics card you can afford....which can be trickey, but a 6600GT is getting rather entry level already.

Metlas PC is better....but I'd still try for a better card...
