427021 2006-02-04 01:40:00 Oops, I had a momentary lapse of reason and flahsed my bios... however it didn't work AAARGH!!!

Now apparently the Asus motherboards have a backup BIOS where it'll allow you to boot into a special bios load screen to load a backup of your bios... Does anybody know how this works, and what the key combination is to get into it, and whether the whole process might work? Nothing at all displays on my screen anymore... I don't know whether that's because the motherboard is completely fried, or just because the video card hasn't yet been told to activate the screen?

Please help :)

427022 2006-02-04 01:48:00 There won't be a key combination to activate this if nothing comes on the screen. You need a working BIOS to provide the code to see a keyboard. There might be a jumper provided for this. But I have an idea that if it's there it would have come up on the screen. Find the manual. :D Graham L (2)
427023 2006-02-04 01:50:00 I dont know about a backup BIOS, but depending on which ASUS mobo you have, some ASUS mobos support Crashfree BIOS 2.

All u do is chuck in the motherboard cd and boot from it, and hopefully it'll flash the BIOS to the original version of the BIOS. Then u can flash it later with a later version of the BIOS.

Whats the model of your motherboard?? The Crashfree BIOS 2 definitely works. BOTH of these support it. I killed the other mobo here, and all I had to do was chuck the mobo cd in, boot from it, and it came back to life, after the cd had flashed the BIOS with the original version of the BIOS.

I remember reading somewhere about it supporting crashfree bios (which is why I asked here)... Putting the CD in doesn't seem to work though - I thought there was a key combination to get it to work, but I don't know what that is :(

427025 2006-02-04 02:09:00 The Basic I/O System provides code for the CPU to execute to provide basic operations. If the BIOS is Bognored, there isn't any code to execute. To recognise keystrokes you need some code running. Graham L (2)
427026 2006-02-04 02:12:00 Nope dont think there's any key combinations . Well not if the P4PE supports Crashfree BIOS 2 . Well all it says in these manuals is: (Even tho these are different models) .

1 . Boot the system .

2 . When a corrupted BIOS is detected, the following screen message appears

Bad BIOS checksum . Starting BIOS recovery . . .

Checking for floppy

If there's no floppy disk found in the drive, the system automatically checks the CD-ROM .

3 . Place the support cd in the CD-ROM . The support CD contains the original BIOS for this motherboard .

Bad BIOS checksum . Starting BIOS recovery . . .
Checking for floppy . . .
Floppy not found!
Checking CD-ROM . . .
CD-ROM found .

Reading file "***** . ROM" . Completed .

Start flashing . . .

4 . When the BIOS update process is completed, reboot the system .

Thats WHAT should happen with a Crashfree 2 BIOS mobo .

It looks like the P4PE supports ASUS Crashfree BIOS, dunno if this is the same as Crashfree BIOS 2 . Or not . If it doesnt work, I would say something else is dead .

You maybe thinking of EZ-Flash . The keys are ALT+F2 . This is handy, coz all u need is a floppy, but u also need the BIOS update (you dont need AFUDOS/Aflash tho) .

ALT+F2 on bootup will flash the BIOS from a floppy automatically .

I found my manual, and it says basically the same as you've just told me, however it doesn't do anything :) it also says to try Alt+F2, but no result. I think Graham might be right - nothing is showing on screen, so I'm guessing the BIOS isn't working enough to tell the screen, keyboard, or disk drives to do anything :( I think I screwed it :)

427028 2006-02-04 02:23:00 I think ALT+F2 only works from floppy not a CD, or a USB key (I tried this on here) . It didnt work .

I had to copy the AFUDOS command to the key, but now anytime I want to flash the BIOS on this, all I have to do, is copy the latest BIOS to the key, and since the key is bootable, I can boot into DOS from it . And flash the BIOS (Since I've removed the floppy completely) .

427029 2006-02-04 04:00:00 yeh was gonna say.......download a bios file onto floppy from asus.com and boot from that.....you shluld be ok f you do that drcspy (146)
