426968 2006-02-03 22:52:00 Have been reading in Feb 2006 PC World Page 91 "After-hours cleanup" about how this program will, when you shut down your PC, run applications of your choosing before finalising shutdown. I like the idea and would use it for a sequence such as AVG, Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy.

However my question is - what if one of these programs finds something suspicious ? You would not be there to make a decision (gone off to bed probably) and the program would do what ? (unless you set it up to make the decisions !)

Suppose running AVG first is a best way to run and then if it finds a virus then that is the most important thing to know, rather than just about "data miners".
I would then, when I get up in the morning see where it has stopped and make a decision.

I have spent some time looking for reviews or comments but have not found any of note. The comments on the FileWare's website are minimal.

Downloading the program is an option of course and seeing what the help part says or just experimenting. I am loathe though to download too many programs that I might not keep because it seems you clutter up and slow the registry etc because an uninstal does not necessarily get rid of everything.

Can anyone tell me or should I just download and give it a go please ?
any suggestions valued
Misty :help:

426970 2006-02-07 07:30:00 Sorry Misty, I started to reply when you first posted but flagged it since I didn't really have anything constructive to offer .

I have thought about doing the same myself but, like you, wondered what happened when the programs stopped for further instructions should they find anything . Adaware and Spybot don't automatically continue after finding malware, they need the user to select what to quarantine, delete, etc so in the end I decided it wasn't really worth bothering with .

Most of these things can be run in the background whilst you are happily browsing PF1 or whatever and they don't all have to be run the same day unless they pick up some nasties and if that were the case I want to be there to see what they have caught .

See, I told you I had nothing useful to say . :p

426971 2006-02-07 07:32:00 Well, I didn't think so, Misty - but then again, I can't help with the answer.
But as it sounds interesting, I'll wait & see also...

P.S. Just seen Foxy's answer.
Her "nothing useful to say" is however more useful than mine...

Yes you do Foxy as always. I do tend to run them separately then go upstairs to make coffee or placate Mrs Misty ..... so guess that I really need to try running them in tandem with other activities. I do have a fairly up-to-date machine so should make it work !! If I had a Maserati would I trot along at 100km per hour ??

re - "being there" - I think that you have reflected my concerns !

426973 2006-02-07 09:12:00 Well, you could always try it Misty, and let me know how you get on. Then we will both know. :D FoxyMX (5)
426974 2006-02-07 20:54:00 Spyware program are almost always going to find something suspicious, even on fresh installs.

Case in point, Ad-aware and spybot both identify Alexa as sypware. "The issue is the 'Related Links' feature of IE (pre-XP SP2) which appears as the 'Tools'/'Show Related Links' menu item"

If you do ANY internet cruising, you'll probably have any number of tracking cookies. Personally I wouldn't consider these spyware / malware / badware.

Please don't take this as support for tracking cookies. I think all marketers would have to evolve before they could earn the title of "scum". If I ever meet the person who came up with the idea of showing "pre-show entertainment", commercials, before a movie, I won't be responsible for my actions.

But then, as you say, you are "mostly harmless" !!

426976 2006-02-08 18:50:00 . . . . as far as this problem goes:

"Downloading the program is an option of course and seeing what the help part says or just experimenting . I am loathe though to download too many programs that I might not keep because it seems you clutter up and slow the registry etc because an uninstal does not necessarily get rid of everything . " . . . . .

I just run CrapCleaner ( . ccleaner . com/) to eradicate all the crumbs and trails left over from completed installs/uninstalls . " target="_blank">www . ccleaner . com/) to eradicate all the crumbs and trails left over from completed installs
