426711 2006-02-03 02:05:00 This qn has probably been asked a million times, but technology and brands move so fast I thought I would take the risk of being flamed and ask again...

What do you experts recommend for a hard drive brand/model? My C: Drive is starting to make some alarming 'chirping' noises when under load so I figure it may be time to get a replacement...

I think 80Gb should do it. The following are my specs (edited from Everest report):

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional OS Service Pack 2
CPU: AMD Athlon 64, 2000 MHz (10 x 200) 3200+
MBd: Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-9 (3 PCI, 2 PCI-E x1, 1 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR DIMM, Audio, Dual Gigabit LAN, IEEE-1394)
Chipset: nVIDIA nForce4 Ultra, AMD Hammer
Memory: 512 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 6200 (128 MB)
IDE Controller: NVIDIA CK804 Parallel ATA Controller (v2.7)

Present Storage:
Disk Drive: SAMSUNG SP0411N (40 GB, 7200 RPM, Ultra-ATA/133)
Disk Drive: ST340016A (40 GB, 7200 RPM, Ultra-ATA/100) (I don't know what brand this is - Seagate?)

Recommendations gratefully accepted - I looked at the Ascent catalogue and went into brain fade with the choices.

426712 2006-02-03 02:15:00 As always.... don't guess that your hard drive is defective - test it with the manufacturers tools.

Seagate with ye 5 year warranty would be your best bet (parallel not SATA). Ascent have the filtering options that will show you the sweet spot per megabyte (about 250 GB by the looks of things).

ST340016A - yep that be Seagate Tech.

I will only flame you - if you do not have a backup.

Hmmm, on Ascent's Hard Drive page have a look at the most popular section..

426714 2006-02-03 02:41:00 Without straying into SCSI drives, the Western Digital Raptor series is expensive but stands out in performance. At 10,000rpm it gives me the shutters.

Raptor WD740GD 78GB is less than $350. The new Raptor WD1500ADFD at 150GB a little less than $600.

If you're looking for quiet and cheap, Samsung is highly recommended.

426716 2006-02-03 04:44:00 Thanks folks. As high speed not terribly important to me because of what I use this PC for, I guess it sounds like Seagate over Western Digital. Thanks again.

Will do that first, thanks gibler.

Thanks. I have backups automatically scheduled via synchronisation each day to the second drive and to my networked laptop, plus periodic backups to an external drive kept in the house instead of my office, and a PocketDrive that I use for travelling. So I have backups galore - an embarrassment of riches really.

Will do. Thanks again gibler.

426718 2006-02-03 05:39:00 Western Digital for me -- I've used Seagate drives in the past but now prefer WD

You'll get more value for your $ (per GB) at around the 160-200GB size rather than at the 80GB range.

A 5 year warranty is hard to argue with. Thats why I switched from WD to seagate
