427051 2006-02-06 07:52:00 This (www.short-media.com) is what a hotswap involves. So I could buy an old dud Asus motherboard off Trademe and possibly get mine going again?

Yup you could. Well, one with a working BIOS chip.

Its a good way of doing it, but dangerous if you screw it up!

Or you'll have 2 dead systems

You'll need a working system for a hotswap, not a dead board . You might be lucky though in getting one with a compatable BIOS chip that will get the system to an A:/ prompt for you to flash it with the BIOS version you want/need .

Of course, as you know, the flashing process is not guaranteed, but is worth a shot if cost and, nothing else is agreeable ;)

427054 2006-02-06 08:33:00 Hmm, yes probably just buying a BIOS chip from some third party company with the bios all flashed for you is the best way to go. But shipping from the US can be expensive.

The hardest part of hotswapping is finding a sucker who will agree (hehe or someone who doesn't know what you are up to). ;)

Gee I hope their latest Crashfree BIOS version on new motherboards actually works :D

Crashfree BIOS 2 does work on the other ASUS mobo here . I found that out .

Stupid Powerarchiver has an option for * . 01 (spanned RAR files), this was ticked . And the BIOS update I downloaded ended in 01 lol .

I didnt realise this, but tried to extract the BIOS from the zip file anyway .

And u guessed it, Powerarchiver thought I was extracting an archive which was over a disk full (it wasn't, it was only 128k or so) .

BUT, I tried to flash this update anyway . And the BIOS brought up a warning, saying the update wasn't compat or something . BUT I flashed it anyway lol .

Bad move . It killed the system, and lucky for me I still had the mobo cd . And thankfully, when I put the cd in to boot from it, it flashed the BIOS to the original BIOS . Then, all I had to do, was go to the ASUS site, and reflash the latest version of the BIOS . And voila, its now up and running again .

The fact that the Asus High Priests have used, in error, deficient mutterings and incantations as they sacrificed the BIOS goats, is a bit of a giveaway as to how arcane flashing is.

I'd hazard a guess that this BIOS was also flashed via a utility running in Windows, which adds MS's High Priests into the mix along with Asus's and whatever software was left running..... hmmm, let me see now, how about Norton's High Priests, they know a thing or two about sacrificing, which is good for them because they know F all about keeping something up and running around.

BTW, Gibler, have you got an answer yet to my query ten or so posts back or are you still ruminating on it?

Midavalo, wait for Asus to get back to you, if you've been discreet in your inqueries with them, you may be lucky and get a free chip out of them.

427057 2006-02-06 09:18:00 Yer, how did u update this BIOS Midavalo?

I cant find anything on the ASUS site for this mobo, to flash it with.

There's no sign of AFUDOS, or Aflash, on the ASUS site.

Some ASUS mobos can be updated in Windows with a program, but you'll have a bigger chance of killing the BIOS, if it freezes during the update.

Bah, there is nothing wrong with upgrading from within Windows. Yeah, I'd disable my anti-virus software but other than that, it is fine.

Nortons doesn't have high priests, only a bunch of village idiots proclaiming "I have seen the light". ;)

Well hopefully Asus does get back to him (although in my experience you get your scripted answers back from such companies.. and later down the track a bios version is released that fixes the issue).

I indeed have a list (pretty small one) but because I want to be polite, I won't be releasing it :D

Your village is calling you home Gibler, the light bulb man isn't happy with his new social status, since you left.
