427342 2006-02-05 21:41:00 Sounds pretty good - and don't let others put you off the Pentium - it's a really solid chip.

However, definitly double the RAM - it's such a small investment for such a performance boost.

427343 2006-02-06 00:29:00 your gonna get heat issues with the P4's. and getting a shiny case isnt going to help, the AMD 64's have been made to run a damn site cooler, so have a case that has a million fans is not really an advanatge, just and exhaust fan and an entrance fan does the job nicely.

if i was you, i would wait till april...AMD are re-releasing the AMD 940 chipset which is going to obelete the 754 (which already is) and the 939.

and by then, you may have a bit more money to do alot more things with :)

427344 2006-02-12 19:11:00 Yeah im with greg - im gonna go with the pentium - if everyone is going for amd someone has to go support the other team - for the sake of competition  but i have used pentuims since the PIII 733 and is been good for me and before you say "you've never used an amd" i have and did not notice any difference to the equivelant P4. anyway my :2cents: but yeah im going for 1.5 or 2gb ram and maybe a 7800 of some kind ASAP

cheers for all the help, you guys rock!

427345 2006-02-13 02:00:00 Go P4 at your peril, , new cases ventilate the P4 Preshot better than your old one would, and even then throw out a lot of heat.

You have been warned!

What a lot of rot. There's a lot of P4's out there doing ther job without any trouble.
They may run hotter than AMD. So what?
They mightn't be as good as AMD. (Whatever that means) Again, so what?

And a lot with trouble...
1) Old case will have insufficent cooling, causing cpu to throttle when hot.
2) Prescotts draw ALOT of power, the psu may very well not be up to the task.
3) The guy is obviously on a budget, he will get more bang for his dollars with a AMD cpu.
4) Like clocks between Intel & AMD, the AMD will perform better. He wants to game!
5) ....well, the rest is just bias' towards AMD...

I agree with every word you say.
But I get annoyed when someone says a P4 is rubbish. I had one once and I never had any real complaint. Likewise I have an AMD at present and have no complaints with it either.
So what does that prove?

427349 2006-02-13 07:53:00 That you complain about everything else but the CPU. Metla (12)
427350 2006-02-13 08:07:00 I have really enjoyed my AMD64 3200 XP chip. Its been good to me.

Oh, and of course, 1 GB of RAM is minimum. Don't get that computer without it, seriously.

Also, I have onboard 5.1 sound, and its fine for me, with my jazz speakers, which are nothing flash. So, you are safe with onboard sound.

427351 2006-02-13 08:11:00 Not sure what people are on about when they say that Prescotts overheat. My P4 3.0gig runs in a standard ATX case, one exhaust fan in the back and the one on the PSU - it's the middle of summer, and I have no heating problems whatsoever. After running all day the MOBO temp monitor rarely goes over 35 C Greg (193)
