427031 2006-02-05 05:02:00 My aunt just fell over, giddy.

As has been explained, unless you ahve a duplicate CMOS/BIOS you're not going to load anything on that board that isn't already there and working . Doesn't matter whether by CD, floppy or ESP, there is nothing by whicch to instruct, no awareness, unless the board has the facility to do so. Your most likey success will be to hold a séance, because this BIOS has moved on

Was the benefit of the flash worth it?

427032 2006-02-05 06:14:00 awareness, unless the board has the facility to do so.Yes, but what I thought (and it seems others here also thought) was that Asus boards were set up for this possibility, that if something screwed up in the BIOS flash that it had this system (the "Crashfree BIOS" which is talked about all through the motherboard manual, and clearly marked repeatedly on the motherboard box) to allow you to reflash the old BIOS if it was backed up (or downloaded), which it was. It seems however it doesn't always work as intended.
Was the benefit of the flash worth it?Like I said earlier I had a momentary lapse of reason :) The benefits of the flash could have been worth it in the long run. I had been planning a CPU upgrade, and the bios flash meant I could possibly have used faster CPUs... Now it seems I'll need a new motherboard, and probably with that a new (faster) CPU, so it might be worth it after all :D but a bit more expensive :annoyed:

I wasn't really paying much attention during the flash - in hind sight I realise what I should have done differently, but once I restarted the PC (due to some software I installed) it was all over. If I hadn't tried to restart the PC I could have retried the flash, or at least restore the backup. It's too late now :(

427033 2006-02-05 06:32:00 Err, so does it work at all? When u press the power button??

Can you hear the fans etc spinning, or not??

Do the hdd LED/power LED's light up / flash?

Or does everything else work but the monitor? The monitor doesnt come on?

If you cant hear anything at all, something else has died on this system .

Do the hdd LED/power LED's light up / flash? Both the HDD and the Power LEDs light up. The HDD light in fact stays on until I turn the PC off again.

Or does everything else work but the monitor? The monitor doesnt come on?Keyboard lights don't work, and the mouse doesn't light up (not sure what stage the mouse usually starts...?) The monitor does not come out of stand-by mode, but nothing seems to happen in the PC (can't hear the drives running like they normally would. When I hit the power button the fans start up, the CD drive lights go (just flash on and off for about 3 seconds), the power and HDD LEDs light up (as mentioned earlier) and that's it. It just sits there - I've left it for half-an-hour and doesn't appear to be any change. No HDD noise, no keyboard or mouse lights. Have to hold the power switch in for about 4 seconds before the machine turns off, but that's all I can do.

427035 2006-02-05 09:43:00 Is the BIOS chip removable?

If yes, you can get a new one from Asus or some crowd, who I forget the name of, in the US . There may even be people in NZ who can replace it for you, in fact I'm sure there are .

There may even be people in NZ who can replace it for you, in fact I'm sure there are.I haven't looked, but I doubt it. The board was a fairly cheap one ($200) so I imagine it won't be removable. Chances are even if it is removable it may be cheaper for me to just buy a new board (just a $60-$80 I guess)...

Or should I buy a new decent board and a new CPU and upgrade in the process? :D The old board and CPU are socket 478 so it's getting on a bit anyway...

Plus with everyone talking so much about AMD these days I might take the plunge and buy one (and a board to match)... I've always (always) bought Intel... Do AMDs still run a bit hotter than Intels? Main reason I ask that is because hotter CPU may mean bigger fan which would mean more noise... right? We're wanting to go for less noise (since the PC is right next to the bed)... I'm not much of a gamer (well not games that really need high-end CPU - I've been running a Celeron), but had been thinking of switching to a P4 (since I already had a board that'd take one)...

Anyway :)

427037 2006-02-05 09:55:00 Try clearing cmos jumper on mainboard.
Worked for me on my Jetway board.
At least i could boot from the floppy again to reflash bios.
Hope this works for you, I know the feeling when you see that blank black screen.

427038 2006-02-05 10:13:00 Try clearing cmos jumper on mainboard.Thanks. I just tried it but it didn't work :(

However while I had the case open, I found the BIOS which does look like it might be removable... not really sure though :)

427039 2006-02-05 10:19:00 problem with importing a new bios chips is that the cost of getting it over may outweight the benefits and since there are newer better motherboards and CPU's... well go figure ;) bob_doe_nz (92)
427040 2006-02-05 10:27:00 I have an Asus P4B533 MB. It says in the manual don't flash the bios unless there is something wrong with it.
