2006-02-05 18:45:00 | Hi, After re-installing windows XP, i have found that I can no longer play ANY video files on my PC. I have installled windows media player 10, real player, and a XP codec pack, but still when i attempt to open video files, it wont play at all. It just freezes te system and i have to close it down or restart the system. Does anybody know what I should do to remedy this? I could play all videos before the re-install, so its clearly because of this. I can however still play music on the players. Its just videos im haing probs with. PLEASE HELP!Im a university student and need my PC to play vids as alot of my learning modules are online vids. :groan: Thanks

2006-02-05 18:52:00 | Does Media Player say you need a codec? And does WMP bring up a popup/message, giving you a site/URL where u can download whatever codec? What format are these videos usually in?

2006-02-05 19:08:00 | Try this (http://www.videolan.org/) program. Its free. See if this will play those Mpegs. WMP isnt that user friendly! Is WMP up to date with its patches etc?

Ill give that programme a try - but even real player wouldnt work - so im not holding much hope! I think WMP is up to date - but when i go to the windows update page, it wont let me download the updates for anything. |

2006-02-05 19:20:00 | Hmm does Windowsupdate show an error, when u go there?? What happens when you go to the Windowupdate site? Anything? Do you have something like Powerdvd on a cd there somewhere??

2006-02-05 19:26:00 | well, it says that my system failed the verification test, which is crazy, as i got my PC from pc world pre-installed . Because of this I cant download updates, although it did download service pack 2, as my usb's are 2 . 0 . I really cant figure it out to be honest . Do you think this will have an effect on my problem? I could maybe see that it would affect microsoft software such as MMP, but surely not Real Player, or the player you reccomended?? And no i dont have powerDVD

2006-02-05 19:51:00 | well, it says that my system failed the verification test, which is crazy, as i got my PC from pc world pre-installed. You mean it failed the validation part of your version of XP? When u tried to validate your version of XP? Go back to Windowsupdate, and copy and paste the exact error / and error code (if one comes up), back here. I dont think it'll affect WMP or Realplayer. BUT the only way you'll get updates is if Automatic updates in XP is ticked/enabled. Until u / we figure out why Windowsupdate doesn't work.

2006-02-05 20:06:00 | yeah, it failed the verification steps. ive got automatic updates turned on. The message just says, very basically, that my windows xp is not official key, meaning its a pirate. :illogical However, like you said, it shouldnt affect the WMP. Anyway, i tried to stram some audio from amazon to my realplayer and the crash happened again. Which is bad news, as it means it happens with some audio too. I think it was just an mp3 clip. I recently installd a new graphics card, geforece 6600gt..and ive already installed the new drivers..although not the newest ones, as one of my games doesnt work with it. could this be te prob? but then again, that wouldnt explain the audio failure from amazon.....when i try and play music stored on my pc its fine though...but vids doent work either from net or my pc....
