427969 2006-02-07 04:36:00 I need a driver for Model V1456VQE using XP but am confused with Model numbers. They show as V1456VQE-C, -R1, -T etc. Can anyone advise how this works?. Also Modem has very short cable. How can this be overcome please.
(I have heard all the jokes about wire stretchers etc) Thanks.

427970 2006-02-07 04:53:00 This is the external version of that modem?

If it is, then it must be one of these two models:

56K e-modem (1456VQE-C) (www.dynalink.co.nz) - discontinued model

56K e-modem II (1456VQE-C2) (www.dynalink.co.nz) - current model

Looking at the manuals for each modem, the older C model has only one phone line plug at the rear of it while the newer C2 model has two phone line plugs at the rear.

I take it you mean the serial cable is too short to reach your computer?

Thanks Jen. Yes external modem and that clears that up as it has only one phone line so it is the older model. I presume the manual would have quoted the "C" but I bought it on TradeMe so didn't get a manual. I don't even know what the LED's mean yet as have always had internal modems. Yes, I was referring to the serial cable. they may be short for a reason but that doesn't help much.

427972 2006-02-07 07:15:00 You can get longer serial cables from DSE.

2 Metre Serial Extension Cable (www.dse.co.nz) - $9.87

427974 2006-02-07 08:47:00 Get the manual from the same link Jen gave you for the drivers and quick guide. Murray P (44)
427975 2006-02-07 20:29:00 If it's an external modem and running over a serial cable, it's probably less sensitive to drivers. It may even work with a "Hayes compatible" driver. (Man, I'm showing my age) kingdragonfly (309)
427976 2006-02-07 20:51:00 Thats a very good reliable modem, I used to buy them by the box of 100 at a time.

They were very reliable and good quality. (I later changed to buying D-Link as they were cheaper and also reliable). (The names D-Link and DynaLink are too similar yet different products, very confusing).

The inbuilt XP drivers for an RS232 serial external modem probably work fine, but from memory they tended to run at only 33.6 kbs in that manner sometimes. As above, serial RS232 modems are not as sensitive to drivers (they have their own inbuilt CPU and have little dependence on the PC's CPU)

I presume then that I should try to get the correct driver?. I bought this on TradeMe so no manual etc. Perhaps I would be better to buy a new D-Link you mention. What model should I look for?. Also with these external modems can you hear the dialling?. You will realise from my dumb questions that I haven't had an external modem before. Thanks for you help.

427978 2006-02-08 02:37:00 A proper serial modem should "just work". Any "driver" is likely to just contain information to help Windows set (Windows) up for the local telephone system.

Plug it in. Try it. :D
