427753 2006-02-06 14:25:00 i somehow managed to delete paint and the calculator accessories in windows. i have tried going to control panel > add/remove windows compoments and reinstalling these but i get the message, "please insert XP disc" etc. I don't have this disc as my computer was preinstalled with XP, so what can i do to get paint and the calculator back?

thanks for any help

427756 2006-02-07 03:56:00 A rescue/repair CD will put the computer back to ancient settings which would have changed considerably since then. bob_doe_nz (92)
427757 2006-02-07 04:03:00 This might not get you anywhere but it's worth a try.
Use the search utility and look for paint.* . If it finds a "paint.exe" make a shrortcut. Does anyone know what the calculator executable is called?

427758 2006-02-07 04:11:00 calc.exe

erm, what version of Windows XP are you using?
Service pack 1?
Service pack 2?

smoeone might be able to send you the files needed through msn or something like that

427759 2006-02-07 04:14:00 Paint is called mspaint.exe and calculator is called calc.exe.

There is usually more than one copy on your computer (god knows why) but in my case, on W2k copies of both can be found in:

C:\WINNT\system32\DLLcache

C:\WINNT\system32

C:\WINNT\Servicepackfiles\i386

Failing that, anybody can email you a copy of each, they total about 4.5MB. Put them in either of the top two folders above then right-click and choose "Send to Desktop". Do likewise if you find that they are still there.

You can also download mspaint from the Net, don't know about calc though.

427760 2006-02-07 04:35:00 Oh well, I was close. I nearly suggested a search for *paint.* :D.

I think the DLLcache directory is used to repair problems with missing/damaged system files at boot time, Billy. The i386 directory contains (often compressed) a complete set of system files -- including any updated versions. It can be used to reinstall W2k (with winnt.exe, not setup.exe).

The system32 directory would be the best place to put any found or loaded executables. That's in the default path. I suspect they might actually still there ... and just the links (shortcuts) missing from the menus.

Use the "Search for files or folders" function, with mspaint.exe and calc.exe as your search terms. Calculator won't find anything. Do individual searches, don't try to do both at once.
