2006-02-06 10:18:00 | I was on a 2Mps plan but only got 225 (approx) with it so I have moved to a slower speed at a reduced rate. Now I was wondering why I was getting such slpw speeds when my son, who is with another ISP (it doesn't seem to matter which one you're with these days as Telecom owns the copper wires) is getting just what he pays for, 2Mps or close to it. He DOES lives inside the Auckland CBD area, however - a location thing? My guesses why I was so slow are: (1) Location. Out here in Pakuranga, there must be miles of copper wire to travel before I get the signals. :horrified (2) I still have a 56k modem installed so that I can use my fax. It's additional to my ADSL router. Would this modem have a software interaction with the router? It is Bitware software for the fax. (3) There never was a 2Mbs service - I was just told that there was and I believed what I was told. :dogeye: (4) Internal wires. I have an extension from my point of entry to the computer that is twice as long as it ought to be. (5) A Combination of these or... (6) None of these, it's something I haven't thought of yet. (Like no transmission over optical fibre which is suppposed to be faster than copper wire). :stare: I'd be interested to receive any responses from people who see slow broadband as an issue. Thanks in advance, eef2

2006-02-06 10:25:00 | Have you phoned your ISP about it? (& who is your ISP & who is your sons ISP?) | stu161204 (123) | |
2006-02-06 10:42:00 | Yes, Stu. When I did they, (Slingshot) told me that I was on an original plan of 50x faster than dial up and was a flat rate (no limits). They then said that no-one should be on that, and I was hurriedly moved off it, which I thought was strange, but do not want to read too much into it. My son's provider was Xtra, but he took my advice over time, saw the light, and eventually moved to Orcon where he sent me evidence of 2 Mbs performance. I would be happy to answer any other questions..... Regards, eef2

2006-02-06 18:26:00 | You need to be within 5Km of the exchange. Whats your lines like? Noisy? Could be the problem. They had you on the wrong plan?

2006-02-06 18:34:00 | I think you may have forgotten a 5th option which is... 5) New Zealand has an excrement filled Communications Provider who is only interested in their end of year dollar figure rather than the functionality and service level of the network they claim to provide to the New Zealand consumer. cheers chiefnz

2006-02-06 19:34:00 | (1) Location . Out here in Pakuranga, there must be miles of copper wire to travel before I get the signals . Would you care to PM me what street you're in? Reason being that I've lived in two locations in Pakuranga, and have always had really decent speed . I was on full speed adsl for a while (8Mb/s) and used to get 4 - 6Mb/s download speeds . I'm now on 2Mb/s plan and consistently get around 2Mb/s . The only difference I noticed when I moved to my current address is that my dial-up speed is better . Not sure why . [edit] Nevermin - I just noticed you're in Farm Cove - a fair bit away from where I'm located in Pakuranga Heights . So I can't comment on whether your location (ie distance from the exchange) is an issue . I do know that we're both on the same exchange though .

2006-02-07 05:50:00 | Thanks for reply, PC tec. How would I find out about the noise on my line? Is there a program I can run? Cheers, eef2.

2006-02-07 06:51:00 | How would I find out about the noise on my line? When you pick up the phone before you dial a number, have a lesson to the noise you get & if you notice any changes to it then theres a possible chance you have noise . How far are you from the exchange?? ( is there any Farm land near you?)

2006-02-07 06:55:00 | I'm now on 2Mb/s plan and consistently get around 2Mb/s. How do you get 2Mb/s when you can only get 200+ kb/s????

2006-02-07 07:13:00 | I was on a 2Mps plan but only got 225 (approx) with it so I have moved to a slower speed at a reduced rate . Where/ how where you getting that info from? A speed test site? (if so which speed test site?) Also is that 225 Kbps or K bytes/sec??? (3) There never was a 2Mbs service - I was just told that there was and I believed what I was told . :dogeye: The fasted you can go on a 2Mbbs plan is about 230 K bytes/sec (approx) Here where I am (near botany & I can see the Pakuranga highway) we get around about: from: . co . nz/speedtest/speedtest500 . html" target="_blank">nzdsl . co . nz For the 500K test: Your line speed is approximately 2381 . 8 Kbps or 291 . 9 K bytes/sec Note: I think I may be having caching issues so that data may not be 100% correct . . (4) Internal wires . I have an extension from my point of entry to the computer that is twice as long as it ought to be . Thats could be a cause as well? ( have you tried it with out the extension led?)
