428136 2006-02-07 10:27:00 Hey, everyone. New to the forums, having some trouble with hardware and hoped I could get some help here. I poseted my current motherboard and processor information below for reference. I recently bought evga's geforce 7800GT and want to upgrade my motherboard to somthing relativly reasonably priced that has pci-express and 64bit processing. I was going to purchase the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe Athlon 64 motherboard but am unsure if my current processor(see below) would be compatable until I have the money to upgrade the processor as well. Thanks in advance to all those that help out!

Main Board
Brand/Model: ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7N8X-X
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD ASUS A7N8X-X
System Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7N8X-X REV 2.xx

Processor
Brand/Model: AMD Athlon XP
Nominal Clock Speed: 2083 MHz
Measured Clock Speed: 2083 MHz
External Clock Speed: 166 MHz

428137 2006-02-07 10:52:00 No, your current CPU, Athlon XP (2800 I think) is definitely not compatible with the A8N that you want.

The A7N8X uses Socket A (462 pins) CPU's while the A8N motherboard uses the new Socket 939 pin CPU. You will need to bite the bullet and buy a new CPU as well as a new Motherboard I'm afraid.

Oh and welcome to the PressF1 Forums :)

428138 2006-02-08 05:58:00 Hey Bob, Thanks for the help and welcome. I have a quick question regarding processors.
If i was to purchase this model of motherboard:
www.newegg.com
What processors are compatable etc?
Thanks in advance all.

428139 2006-02-08 06:18:00 The mobo you selected is an AMD athlon 64bit 939 socket board, incompatible which your current cpu, on-board video also. Watch it though as its a 24 pin PSU plug!
The current AMD athlons use this socket until AM2 coming Q2 2006

428140 2006-02-08 06:25:00 As for the processor, you would have noticed Bob said that your motherboard uses socket A, and all of the new AMD motherboards and processors are socket 939 at the moment, so basicly any CPU that is AMD athlon socket 939, for example the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (www.xbitlabs.com) will be a good buy if you don't want to spend too much, but if you want to go to the extream like me get an X2 :D

Here (www.xpcgear.com) are the specs of the motherboard, according to this it supports all socket 939, the FX series, the 64 bit series, and the great X2 series :D

428141 2006-02-08 08:27:00 Thanks guys great stuff, I'm checking out the 3200 looks like my price range! I know I shouldnt go for the onboard graphics but its the cheapest? Do you think it will be a problem for my 7800GT? jafurey (9769)
428142 2006-02-08 17:54:00 No, shouldn't be as long as you disable the onboard in the BIOS The_End_Of_Reality (334)
