2006-02-06 20:56:00 | What joy when I read Stephen Manes article (PCW this month p.12). Paradise Gained!!! I had seen mention of Yahoo Search previously but I believed it was for web search only and to find it could do magic on my machine was unexpected bliss. I downloaded and after a short time wading through all my emails it came to life. Then I did a quick email search with a stunning result. A second email search began and the program locked. It would only respond to Alt-Ctrl-Del and now no longer functions, doggedly clinging to Scan is stopped in the left panel and refusing to restart. Paradise Lost!!!!!!!!! Have others had the same experience? Any suggestions anyone? I cant even find a way to uninstall it.

2006-02-08 18:56:00 | Thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately the program now refuses to start at all. If I try to uninstall it refuses to do so saying Please close Yahoo! Desktop Search before attempting to un-install. So since I cant start it, I cant stop it! What a pest of a program. Im spending time and frustration on something that was supposed to be of infinite help to me. Sounds like computers all over.

2006-02-09 01:13:00 | Further to the above, for some strange reason I decided to check the Yahoo Desktop Search program for viruses, using Trend Micro PC Cillin. Nothing was found, but the very next time I clicked the YDS icon it miraculously came to life and I was able to use it successfully for doing the original search that I intended. As our American cousins say, go figure! Or as Alice said curioser and curioser. | Mike S (1766) | |
2006-02-14 01:20:00 | Since the previous message I quickly returned to square one, where Yahoo Desktop Search once more hangs. If I double click on the desktop icon it fails to start at all. If I right click and then click "Run as" it gets as far as a Grey panel, centre screen, with a magnifying glass and a screen, does a number of operations and then always hangs with the message. "Registering message handlers..." Nothing I do at this point either shuts it down or gets it running (other than as below). The odd thing is that initially (very briefly) and once by chance (it seems) later it ran fine and was impressive. Now whatever I do it always hangs. When it does that the only way I can stop it is the good old Win98 standby Alt/Ctrl/Del. I tried disabling my Trend Micro PC Cillin AV and no joy. It seems there is some other software it doesn't like, and short of gradually uninstalling very piece of software I'm at a loss to identify a cure. My OS is XP Home and all other software behaves normally Can anybody help please? The potential power of this program seems too good to miss out on without a fight!

2006-02-14 02:09:00 | You could try uninstalling it from safe mode, if that doesnt work you could try a system restore | Overdrive_5000 (4950) | |
2006-02-20 19:48:00 | More info: I find the point at which it hangs is where it is doing its' initial checks. It always leaves the message in the panel "Registering Message Handlers...". Is that a clue to anybody please as to what's upsetting it? What precisely is a message handler in the context of this program?

2006-06-14 23:20:00 | This message is really to 'Overdrive_5000', as it was his suggestion to try uninstalling in Safe Mode, which did work. Very belatedly I eventually did get to try that method (four months on to be more precise!), and I apologise most humbly for the delay. I put it on the back burner as it wasn't stopping doing anything and was just a disappointment and an irritation. Anyway, now it's GONE. Now I might pluck up courage to have a look at the Google version............ Regards, Mike S

2006-06-15 01:33:00 | Mike S, I've just uninstalled it as well,as I found that my backup programs wouldn't work on their scheduled backups, kept coming up with error, something else is using the program!!After turning YDS off, they would run ok. So now I'm looking for something else too. | Neil McC (178) | |
2006-06-15 20:53:00 | Neil, I installed Google Desktop yesterday, and now can't stop playing with it. You must give it a try. Initially I found it not quite intuitive, but half an hour later I was hooked. For indexing pictuires alone Picasa 2 is excellent also. Mike S
