427599 2006-02-06 04:09:00 My Sempron 2800 based Win 2000Pro performed a sucessful boot, windows splash screen showed, but then :-
"STOP Registry file failure

This system has a Maxtor HDD as a backup using Ghost V9, however on retrying to boot the system, I noted during boot that only the master HDD was listed. It now looks like the backup drive has failed and taken down the system in the process.

I have removed the data and power cables from the faulty drive, but the stop error is still there.

Help please - wot do I do now?

427601 2006-02-06 06:57:00 Thanks Speedy, certainly Im in the ballpark now, but the link refers to using the "recovery consul", what is that, but more importantly, where do I find it?

The help menu does not mention it.

427602 2006-02-06 07:03:00 I think u boot from the cd then press R to go into the recovery console.

I havent actually used the recovery console myself.

Info here (www.kellys-korner-xp.com)

Even tho its says XP, it maybe the same for 2K.

427603 2006-02-06 08:04:00 Yep, boot your win2k CD, one of the options is to Repair and existing installation, then to use the Recovery Console. If you haven't prepared a recovery disc or set it up on your system, there are some options if you know your way around the DOS like commands.

You could try to Repair/Replace system files from the CD (another option when you boot from the CD), but if it's a serious issue, it's often easier, much as I hate to say it, to reinstall Windows. One other option is a paralel install of Windows, see previous option re ease.

Have you discounted other hardware issues? It could be worth having a poke around using a Live Linux CD like Mepis or a recovery CD (Linux based) like EBCD or Insert or BG Rescue and, examine the, supposedly, dead drive at the same time using the disk tools available on those CD's.

Another thing, it's not a good idea to have a backup hard drive running all the while with your main drive, best to use a removable drive system. Also if you clone a disk using Ghost, then for earlier versions of Ghost at least, they warn against re-booting with the cloned drive still connected as slave, as....

"..If you leave the second hard disk in your computer, damage can occur to the operating systems on both disks."
