427476 2006-02-05 21:59:00 Hmm somehow I managed to taff up IE on my XP SP2 computer.

I cant get IE to repair or restore since this has been going on since I reinstalled XP.
I tried modding the registry to allow a reinstall to no avail and I tried to reinstall SP2 to no avail.

This is annoying since I like to manually update Windows, and some programs like Steam for example seem to use IE for displaying web data and such.

Only IE seems to be affected since everything else is working fine. e.g Firefox, Hamachi, Trillian and so on...

Any ideas? Any idea on how to restore apart from using a fresh install of XP?

427478 2006-02-05 22:22:00 Do any errors come up in IE?? Or doesnt it open/work at all?

This (windowsxp.mvps.org) might fix it.

IE 7 is full of bugs. I wouldnt download or use it.

Or try here (support.microsoft.com)

I think the best method is to reinstall a fresh install of XP

427480 2006-02-06 01:06:00 So what probs are u having with IE?

Whats not working? It's not opening? IE itself, going to sites, or what?

Unless spyware or something has screwed it up. Post a hijackthis log here.

Sometimes SP2 won't install properly if there is malware etc on your system. Got a cheek saying that as I still haven't worked up the courage to install SP2. Got the disk, still in its wrapper somewhere.

As SP1 & 2 won't repair or restore or install [sp2] and registry has been altered, have you thought about running Windows File checker to see if there are damaged or missing Windows files before reinstalling?
I know from your posts that you're clued up computerwise, but please don't be offended if I now write the obvious:

Click start and in the run box type sfc /scannow [note space after sfc].
- it will ask for your installation disk if it finds anything wrong.

Anythings got to be better than another install esp. when today's a holiday.
Good luck whatever you do. Cheers.

427484 2006-02-06 05:38:00 No Windows Update does not work. However... If I alter the settings to notify me, it will download when I allow it to.

I just get no net access with taffeynet explorer.

I do have one last theory on what it could be so I'm just gonna test it before I call it quits.

Oh, did I mention I made a Nlite'nd CD twice with different settings :xmouth:
