428616 2006-02-09 02:26:00 Installed new Asus A7S8X mobo in daughter's Win Me Computer and, except for the onboard soundcard everything went sort of well. Soundmax tech support won't talk to me and finding Asus tech support is a lifetime occupation and I've now spent three days trying to sort this out. :badpc:
1. Soundmax Control Panel icon is in Task Bar & Control Panel. Neither will open.
2 System devices has yellow splodge on Soundmax listing, and comment "NTKern.vxd MMDevldr.vxd device loaders for this device could not load the device driver (Code 2).
3. Have loaded 4 different drivers from the OEM CD (including the XP & 2000 drivers !) and the 98/ME drivers from the Asus download site. Soundmax do not have a download department.
I strongly suspect that my teenage grandchildren, all of whom are highly qualified IT experts with the world's most destructive fingers, may have damaged Windows but I am don't know where to go from here. If at all possible I want to avoid another reinstall with all the hassles that go with that.
Help me someone !!!!!!

428617 2006-02-09 02:47:00 did you do format reinstall of windows when you installed the new motherboard ?? tweak'e (69)
428618 2006-02-09 02:51:00 If you've just installed WinME, did you install the mobo drivers as well??

The soundcard drivers for this soundcard, are here (dlsvr01.asus.com)

Is this the name of the file u downloaded?

Which are here (support.asus.com)

If Soundmax appears in add/remove programs, uninstall it, download this zip file, unzip it. And hopefully there's a setup.exe file in it. Double click on it to install them.

Is this the A7S8X-MX you've got? The link above is for the MX. It doesnt look like there's a A7S8X.

Check device manager. Is anything else showing a ?

428619 2006-02-09 03:09:00 Hmm if u do have the MX, according to the ASUS site FAQ

Why doesn't my A7S8X-MX audio work after I installed the audio driver using auto installation?

Answer

Please update BIOS to 1007 or later version and re-install the audio driver again manually. Then, your audio device will work properly.

The BIOS update is here (dlsvr01.asus.com)

And this is awdflash (dlsvr01.asus.com) the program u flash it with.

Both are from the previous site I posted.

428620 2006-02-10 10:30:00 Thanks, Tweak. No I did not reinstall or format after installing the new mobo. Did have a vxd problem and computer would only boot into safe mode so went throught the long and frustrating selective start process and pinned down the problem to two vxd's associated with the firewall we were using. Uninstalled the firewall and problem resolved. But Soundmax would still not install. Have reinstall of Windows in new folder in mind as plan G, but I hate doing this.

428621 2006-02-10 10:34:00 Good one, Speedy, BIOS is V.1005. I'll give it a go in the morning. Can you flash a BIOS with your fingers crossed ???? :)

428622 2006-02-10 10:48:00 Speedy,
Sorry I skipped past your first message and overlooked it completely, Sorry. Yes you're right it is the MX and the drivers you linked to are the ones I had downloaded and were in fact identical to the ones on the CD. Removed the SoundMax listing from device manager and reinstalled but no joy still the same vxd loader message in Device Mgr. Your second post looks more hopeful and I'll do anything to avoid reinstalling Windows with all the hassles involved in reinstalling everything.
Cheers
Creaky.

428623 2006-02-10 17:18:00 I would say, once you update the BIOS to 1007, it'll definitely work.

Just make a system disk, and unzip the BIOS update zip file (unzip it on the hdd, then copy it to the floppy), and then copy awdflash to it.

Then change the bootdisk in the BIOS to disk, boot from the floppy, and type awdflash to see what the commands are to flash the BIOS.

Then flash!

428624 2006-02-10 23:28:00 Good Morning,
BIOS now Rev. 1007 but the 2 *.vxd device loaders are still listed as not working in Device Mgr. NTKern.vxd does not exist in C:\Windows \System in either my own ME system or the problem computer and I wonder if it is only relevant to 2K or XP. In any case the driver I'm using is supposed to be for ME.

I think I shall stand in a corner and give a primal scream and face the horror of a reinstall, most probably to a new folder avoiding a format if possible. I shall then stick pins into dolls representing teenagers! :) :waughh:

428625 2006-02-10 23:53:00 Hmm those soundcard drivers u downloaded from the ASUS site (The link I posted).

Go to device manager in the PC thats having probs, and unzip that zip file (from the link). Is there an inf file in it??

I'm not sure what the ASUS site meant, when it says to install the drivers manually, but it sounds like that zip file may have an inf file in it.

If it has an inf file in the zip file, update the drivers for the soundcard, and point it to the inf file. See what happens then.

Did u set the BIOS to its defaults, when u flashed it to 1007? Then reconfigure the settings, and make sure the soundcard option was enabled?
