428526 2006-02-08 08:39:00 Hi Team

I have been having problems getting Orcon to accept some emails I send, at least I think it is them. The problem originated from This Thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) but has since escalated somewhat as I have tried out a series of tests.

In essence I have my DSL hosted by Xtra and my domain name and main business email hosted by Orcon.

I have three separate email accounts, two with a number of aliases for my family. The latter are on Xtra and Freenet, and I have another email address on Orcon to which my business email address is mapped. I also still have access to my original (private) domain name host server and my original business account there, but that will disappear soon when the server goes off-line

I am getting relaying denied for all messages I try to send to my Xtra address from either of my Orcon addresses, and the same if I try to send to my Freenet address.

I can send freely between all addresses if I use my old business account. This problem is also stopping me from emailing to the Yahoo forum mentioned in my previous thread yet most other emails I send during the day to various parties on various ISPs seem to go OK.

I thought relaying involved using an intermediary server to forward an email but I am well out of my depth here. This is a significant problem for me because from time to time I have been forced to use the old server to get a business email sent and that is not the level of reliability I expect or need. I didn't realise the extent of the problem till I started trying to send to the overseas forum and posted my previous question.

Can anybody explain for me what the actual relaying issue is please, and whether it is a problem that I have to solve or if it is an Orcon service issue. The examples I have given above are just that, examples only as I tested the system, I do not need to send emails to myself.

It is the occasional failures of important business messages that is worrying me.

Cheers

428527 2006-02-08 09:47:00 If your connection is with Xtra all mail account you use have to have the smtp outgoing server set to smtp.xtra.co.nz otherwise you will get relay denied error.
If smtp is set to orcon they will deny you sending mail as will all ISP's if your mail server is not set to the ISP you are connected to.

428528 2006-02-08 09:56:00 Considering the changes you've made are very recent, I'd suggest wait another 12 hours and let us know if the problem is the same. Greg (193)
428529 2006-02-08 10:40:00 Most ISP's do not allow relaying of e-mails. This occurs when you are connected to one ISP via a connection and then try and send e-mail through another e-mail.

The reason for this is that this is one of the major way spammers work.

Some ISP's will allow it for an additional cost and you then usually have to use a secure login to the smtp server to allow this.

428530 2006-02-08 19:54:00 Thanks guys.

The problem is long-standing and was only brought to a head by my shift to Orcon so I fear time will not heal it.

Safari's advice seems so crystal clear and self evident that I can now fully understand why I never thought of it. I'll give it a try later this morning (have to go out right now) and post results.

428531 2006-02-08 20:22:00 I send all my "mail@ millerton.co.nz" mail out via "smtp.whatever_ISP_i_happen_to_be_connected_to_at_t he_time".

Kmail has a drop down menu allowing me to choose mail transport. I have no idea what email client you are using, or if it allows you to quickly change settings as you drift from one ISP to another

Relaying errors happen when i try to SEND via smtp.paradise.net.nz while hanging of an Xtra connection, and vice versa

Picking my mail from pop.millerton.co.nz or from imap.millerton.co.nz is direct nomatter where i connect from.

428532 2006-02-08 22:43:00 OK, all problems solved, Safari had the complete solution .

It never occurred to me to change my outgoing server to that of my ISP, and I don't recall seeing that advice in any literature, help file or post on PF1 that I have read while pursuing this elusive problem in the past .

My work around had been to use the most compatible account only (the private server) when problems struck but that came to a halt when I went to Orcon . I guess this means that the private server was open for relaying all this time . :horrified

It was secure though, so I guess there wasn't anything to worry about .

Thanks to all .

Cheers
