428238 2006-02-08 02:15:00 You go to start/run and type cmd.

You cant boot into DOS with XP.

428239 2006-02-08 02:28:00 There is also a command.com in windows\system32. This can be used for running 16 bit ms-dos programs. Type command instead of cmd in the run box to get a virtual ms-dos prompt. Terry Porritt (14)

428241 2006-02-08 02:54:00 Cool didn't know that, however, if I ever need to delve into CLI, then the programs are almost always 32-bit anyway... Haze (3028)

428243 2006-02-08 03:02:00 It's one of the secrets: Microsoft keeps improving DOS.

Why couldn't they have added these features when people were still predominately using DOS?

428244 2006-02-08 03:04:00 OK got that but what do I type in then ? Have tried several combinations
but none have worked.I thought it was C:/dirC: will get you on the C drive if you are in another drive/partition. cd c:\ or cd \ will get you to the root of the C drive/partition. dir then will give you a directory listing of that directory. The slash "/" is the prefix for options to commands. "dir" isn't an option, it's a command.

428245 2006-02-08 03:26:00 Right, I have several dir listings (most going back to 2004) but
perhaps I should rephrase my original question. What I am looking for is a
"lost" application. I used to be able to come up with a tree of everything on
the drive in pre windows days.Is something like this available in XP now?

Try start/search. Type in the name of the file, for the lost file.

If its lost, maybe someone uninstalled it?
