428989 2006-02-17 21:24:00 Is it true that even thou telecom say they slow us down to dialup speed when we excced cap, they cant? or can they now? as i remember people saying something about lack of technology to do it? csinclair83 (200)
428990 2006-02-17 21:31:00 [QUOTE=Battleneter]NZ is isolated and has a very small population, we use a cable (southern cross cable shared with Australia etc) that costs around a billion dollars. It is very unrealistic to expect NO data caps. North America/Asia and Europe have huge populations that make it far more profitable for there network overhead dollar.

The pricing of Southern Cross cables is alot cheaper than that, well cheaper than a billion....infact they dropped prices back in 2000...by 20% ..The base price for a 15 year 155Mb connection between Australasia and the U.S. has been reduced from $20.6 million to $16.6 million (US $12.9 million to US $10.4 million). Connections from Hawaii to the U.S. have been reduced from $2.2 million to $1.8 million (US $1.4 million to US $1.1 million) and between Australia and New Zealand from $6.6 million to $5.2 million (US $4.1 million to US $3.28 million).

and the cable can now provide speeds of up to 240giga per second.....with ability to upgrade to 480! omg, u'd choke your harddrive in less than a second with that!

Telecom can now slow you down to dialup speed (I know for a fact as it happened to me last month)

428992 2006-02-17 23:55:00 They have always been able to do that. It's just that often they don't have to. They buy bandwidth in bulk. If it's not used, they still pay. But if the usage gets up, the ones using a lot will get chopped back. Graham L (2)
428993 2006-02-20 01:38:00 Bandwidth data caps are a Good Thing ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/Good_Thing" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org) because they help limit the broadband leeches from excessively slowing down the connections that the rest of us use .

Absolute bollocks!

Ever heard of QoS?

Kiwis can't seem to realise the fact that this country has a far worse "rip off" mentality than most other places (Including the UK, the worst in Europe) . It's used as a dumping ground for old technology no-one else wants, which the uninformed sheep which make up the majority of the population are happy to pay top dollar for .

Screw Telecom, unbundle the bastards, and let's get some decent plans in place!

Not quite right there, the fact we have a relatively small population means we are perfect for testing new technology.ie: EFT-POS and NT4

However, I agree that TELECOM is behind the times
