428467 2006-02-08 23:49:00 Can't resist joining in :)

Only the Win98 directory needs to be copied to the hard drive, then after booting from floppy, change to c:\win98 and type setup as already said.

It sounds as though the boot disk you used did not have CDROM support. This site tells you how to install:

428468 2006-02-09 03:37:00 As far as the cdrom drivers go - if your still interested - you need to load up a cdrom driver in the config.sys where /d:mscd001 is the designated name for the driver and the SYS file is the actual driver:

ie. "DEVICE=C:\CDDRV.SYS /D:MSCD001"

Then in autoexec.bat you need to init the cdrom device(s) using MSCDEX with the driver you specified in config.sys and /L : D specifing that the first cdrom drive will be designated the drive letter assignment "D":

ie MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /L : D

There are lots of other parameters and better ways to load the drivers but that's the easy way.

You should really leave DOS to the big boys - I'd be pissed if it was my comp

428469 2006-02-09 04:04:00 much simpler........pull the harddrive out ,...slave it to say your pc for example.......create a folder on it......copy the entire 98cd into that folder......replace the hard drive on the older machine, boot with floppy change to c: then 'cd' to your 98install folder then type 'setup' then tap enter......then you'll be away......

Ps: woulda been MUCH better to do a 'upgrade' install where you simply changed the entire system from 95 to 98 but left everythign intact......this is actually pretty easy, unfortunately for you having formatted the drive it's a little late.....
Awesome. I'll give that a go. He's kinda pissed off at me now, and it sucks cos he's my boss. :yuck:
Haha yeah, the upgrade would have been a good plan, but there was a reasonably computer literate person there who said it wouldn't upgrade, and kept asking for an upgrade cd, instead of an install cd.

Haha some comic relief though, the guy said "Argh I shouldn't have bothered, should have just put XP straight on it."
LOL its got 16MB ram, 1.4G HDD, 2x CD-Rom, and a crappy arse processor. It's less than the min 98 specs, and he wanted to put XP on it!
Least I know more than he does

Cheers for the help guyses, hopefully he'll let me borrow the HDD to transfer the CD onto.
I'll let ya know how it goes.

428470 2006-02-09 04:09:00 ... 2x CD-Rom ...

Even more reason to do the HDD install :) :)

428471 2006-02-10 21:44:00 K I don't know if I'm doing this right...
On my parents computer, took their HDD out, put the crap one in, put the 98 CD in the CD Drive, booted from CD, now installing straight to their HDD. Will this put wrong drivers etc on the HDD? Cos Im installing it on another comp....
I really dont know.
Hope it works.

428472 2006-02-10 21:52:00 No - here's what you want to do:

Hopefully there is a spare IDE plug on your parent's computer . . .

Set the jumper on the crap HDD to slave and put that HDD on the spare plug - using the current OS that is installed on your parent's PC you will (format (with the oldest filesystem available) or delete everything on the crap HDD first) create a folder on the crap HDD called "Win98" you will then put the 98 cd in and copy all files and folders on it to the "Win98" directory (making sure you copy all hidden and system files on it - check your view settings) .

You will then take it out - put the jumper back to master, put it back in the old PC, boot the old PC with a DOS boot disk, change to the "Win98" directory "CD WIN98" and type SETUP and press enter . . .

Windows 98 should then install on the old PC from the hard disk :)

428473 2006-02-10 21:58:00 Not quite correct there, you should have just copied the complete WIN98 folder from the CD to the hard drive . Then just moved it back to the old computer, start it up with a floppy bootdisk and started the install then .

All is not lost though, as after you have finished installing Win98 on your parents PC . The last thing to do is . . . .
Go START-RUN and enter REGEDIT, and delete the following registry folder (and all subfolders under it): HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/Enum (Expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE branch in the left pane . Right click on the Enum key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and pick delete) .
Next, close the computer down and move the hard drive back to the original PC .

Now when it boots up, it will go through the hardware install proceedure again . This time loading the correct drivers .

428474 2006-02-10 23:26:00 C'mon people, I may be a n00b but I'm not all stupid!! :p
I installed it, but stopped it before doing all the hardware detection, then took it up and finished it at their house - I don't have enough IDE cables to do it here.
However, I forgot to put the Win98 CD on the HDD, so cant install all the drivers :S
Have to do that now.
Heres to hoping it works!!
Cheers peeps,
roddy

428475 2006-02-11 02:03:00 Ok... Big problem. No matter how hard I try, I cant figure out how to install the CD-ROM drivers. It's detected and installed the Soundcard Drivers, but no joy with the CD-Rom. It refuses to work at all.
Have tried with the driver floppy, but it's all to no avail.
Any help with installing the CD-ROM drivers anyone??
cheers,
roddy
