428456 2006-02-08 05:44:00 Dosent matter, the custom is what I would pick. Rob99 (151)
428457 2006-02-08 05:46:00 So I got a URL wrong. I'll do it again. I can't do all the work for you. ;0

What's the file you got? An .exe? If so , running it will give you instructions.(Just give it a good floppy). If it's a .zip, it will probably have an .exe in it, and/or instructions.

All may not be lost. The boot floppy might have a CD driver on it which will handle the soundcard CD interface without having to load the Sound Blaster software. (Assuming it is a Soundblaster). The SB interface was still fairly common in 98. (Of course there were a number of other non-IDE intefaces as well as Creative's one). What model is the CD drive? If its a Panasonic 545 (I think) that's the Creative one. But watch out for Mitsui, Philips, Sony ... expecially 2X speed drives. I think they went to IDE with the higher speed drives.

428458 2006-02-08 05:47:00 Only need ramdrive if you need dos utils

A boot disk for dos maybe easier for you, make sure it has the MSCDEX driver

428459 2006-02-08 08:31:00 K well it didn't work. I'm feeling kinda bad cos they had a perfectly working 95 comp, and now they have a completely useless heapa metal.

Heres what happened:
Put the Boot floppy in, it didn't detect any CD-ROM drives.
Fluffed around for ages trying to figure out how to install the drivers.
Found the driver disk, installed that to C:\CDPRO.
Tried restarting, still wouldnt detect CD-ROM drives.
Ran autoexec.bat from C: , got the error message "something... /D:MSCD001 /V
Driver not found"
Or something to that effect.
Where to from here?

428460 2006-02-08 08:57:00 *something= mscdex.exe
ie, error message is
"mscdex.exe /D:MSCD001 /V
Driver not found"
Or WTTE.

428461 2006-02-08 09:01:00 if you have formatted the drive, you will have to install dos onto it, then the sound blaster drivers, then once the cd drive recognised , copy the cd to a temp folder on the drive and run the install from their.
Is it necessary to install sound blaster drivers if i have the cd-rom driver floppy? Cos i cant be bothered getting them if i dont need them, same as a dos install floppy. it sucks cos i dont have a floppy drive, so have to download them, chuck them on a usb stick, go to my neighbours, borrow some floppies, then go to my other neighbours to copy them from my stick to a floppy!!! :waughh:

428462 2006-02-08 09:05:00 Yes, good old dos days, havent done it for awhile.

Best method is to install dos onto hard drive, do you have dos diskettes?
then install cd drive, that will add load c:\cdpro\mscdex.exe into autoexec and create config.sys parameters.

I cant give you the line to add, because I dont know which pci slot the card is in etc....

428463 2006-02-08 09:53:00 Hmmm running and hiding is looking like a good option lol.
I'm really not too sharp with dos..
How do i find out exactly what to enter into autoexec?
Cheers for the help.

428464 2006-02-08 17:53:00 much simpler........pull the harddrive out ,...slave it to say your pc for example.......create a folder on it......copy the entire 98cd into that folder......replace the hard drive on the older machine, boot with floppy change to c: then 'cd' to your 98install folder then type 'setup' then tap enter......then you'll be away......

Ps: woulda been MUCH better to do a 'upgrade' install where you simply changed the entire system from 95 to 98 but left everythign intact......this is actually pretty easy, unfortunately for you having formatted the drive it's a little late.....

428465 2006-02-08 22:28:00 Yes of course, good idea, place the drive in another pc and copy the cd to the drive. Replace drive back to pc, bootup using bootdisk, change to the crive by typing c:\, then cd (change directory) to the folder you copy the cd to and type setup....yes, there is hope yet, oncw windows 98 installed, you will have better luck with cd drive SolMiester (139)
