MPEG-1 is CRAP.

Currently, DivX and Xvid have the greatest compression for the amount of CPU time they require. You could look into x264, but it's not worth it at the moment. As 'somebody' said, AutoGK would be a good tool for you.

428409 2006-02-08 08:36:00 DVD Decrypter (www.doom9.org) is my favourite, it will rip seperate vob/ifo/bup files or to a full ISO image. It removes CSS/CPPM/macrovision/region etc protections so you can then recode the unprotected files to whatever you like with whatever you want. (I prefer nero) Agent_24 (57)
428410 2006-02-08 08:45:00 Another vote for DVD decrypter  Overdrive_5000 (4950)
428411 2006-02-08 09:04:00 I also use DVD Decrypter as my preferred ripping program. Lucky we don't get any of the more devious encryption techniques like they have in other regions. Haze (3028)

Agreed. DVD Decrypter and Nero7.

Works here. Use Nero Recode to put the output from DVD Decrypter back on a DVD.

Handles Sony as well. Downloaded a new version free two days ago.

Possibly this may be different to what you have.

428414 2006-02-08 17:49:00 Mpeg1 is relatively uncompressed video and would be massive. A full DVD of two hours can quite happily be compressed with 2-pass MPeg4 encoding to 700MB!

AutoGK will convert from the .VOB files of the DVD (Mpeg2) to XviD (Mpeg4).

Personally I would recommend Nero Recode. You can grab the CE version from the website free. Its brilliant and lets you choose between MPeg4 which is labels as standard and h.264 which is calls AVC. The AVC is bl00dy nice quality but does take a bit longer to encode. I personally stick with the standard MPeg4 outputs with Nero Recode :)
