You won't have much luck trying to do it with two modems on the same phone line, but on different lines there is no difficulty.

What the ISP does if you do it depends on their policy. They might charge you an extra hourly rate for one of the sessions. They might do an Orcon. They might log out one (or both) sessions. But there's no technical problem.

429131 2006-02-12 01:47:00 I have one computer that is on the dial up internet. Now if I got another computer and plugged it into another telephone outlet in another room(on the same line),would I then be able to connect to the internet using the same internet account? I am not meaning both computers being on the internet at the same time, just one on the internet at any one time.

I have taken a laptop and used it at one place of the country, jumped into a plane and used the same laptop and dial in. No problem. No additional billing. Many ISPs if not all use 0867 which is the same telephone # to call despite where you are in the country.

If you use a desktop PC at home online then you use your laptop at a different phone jack or take it to a mate's place and dial in. Depends on your policy, my one. One PC can be on your package price, like flatrate so that does not change price. But the 2nd PC on at the same time will be billed 2.50 per hour. $2.50 is my ISP's std hourly charge for pple who are not in a package. Other ISPs may have diff policy towards it.

They'll notice and disconnect you.

Sorry Speedy, but that statement is just plain wrong.

On Xtra dial-up you can log-in twice (or more) with the same ID to the same account, (using different phone lines naturally).

All that happens is that they charge $2.50 per hour for the additional simultaneous logins, this commonly happens with extended (and geographically separated) family members that I am aware of.

Its a very useful facility and one that probably keeps a lot of business with Xtra. But not all ISPs allow it as I have already stated.

Xtra's T&C state:

"If more than one user logs on at the same time using the same user ID you will incur additional charges at a rate of $2.50 per hour. We will also charge at that rate for any subsequent users logging on with that username or login ID".

Comments?

429133 2006-02-12 06:15:00 Well if people have money to burn, and want to connect twice go for it :D Speedy Gonzales (78)
429134 2006-02-12 07:20:00 Not the point.

Say ones family are scattered around NZ, they can all use one Xtra ISP account (the family's main account) for email, if the logins happen by chance to be concurrent then additional costs are only a few cents for sending/retrieving an email at $2.50 per hour.

Its much cheaper than having separate ISP accounts for each, when only sporadic use and even more sporadic multiple logins may occur. Its not having "money to burn" as you now say, quite the opposite in fact.

But it is able to happen.
Its not blocked by all ISPs as you stated, which was the point being made.

429135 2006-02-13 06:07:00 Yes this is good then because I would only be using it occasionally, and so I would not have wanted to have to pay for another account to get the odd update. I shall be using my computer(when I get it) for playing games mostly, and be using my mothers computer for the internet. Tony Tucker (9565)
