429093 2006-02-10 07:55:00 Ive been a Winzip fan for nearly 15yrs now, throughly familiar with the program. Now an upstart WinRAR comes along and im stuck getting RAR files to pen.

How can I get Winzip to handle WinRAR files.

Thanks John W

429094 2006-02-10 08:06:00 winrar has been around for as long as i can remember. the later winzips can open most rar files ok.

try winrar, i dosn't annoy me as much as winzip.

429095 2006-02-10 17:34:00 No, Winzip doesn't open / extract rar files. It never has, and most probably never will.

The latest version of Winzip (v10), doesnt open RAR files either.

You'll need either Winrar, or Powerarchiver, which deals with a lot more formats than Winzip. BUT both arent free.

429098 2006-02-10 23:34:00 Wrong question, John. there's no such ting as a "WinRAR" file. There is no such thing as a "Winzip" file. "ZIP" is one of the the range of compression methods WinRAR can handle. RAR might be one of the types that Winzip can handle. I don't know ... I can't be bothered with multiple compression types and stick with zip.

RAR isn't really an upstart. ;) Phil Karn designed the zip compression method a long time ago. RAR did come later, but it was available for download from Simtel20 a long time ago ... probably twenty years ago. Both long predate Windows. There used to be a lot of compression methods ... and each claimed to be better than the rest. After a while, ZIP became pretty well the standard (except for the Apple and Unix people). Even a few percent more compression did not justify having to keep your 10 or 20MB disk clogged with a lot of compression/decompression utilities

These "Winzip" and WinRAR" are commercial versions ... still shareware. You are expected to pay for them both. :D
