430576 2006-02-15 06:55:00 Hello .

My problem first appeared a few months ago when my little brother was messing with the system files and deleted something . I'm not exactly sure what it was but the result was that my system settings were set to default and seemend unable to save any new settings like wallpaper, resolution etc . Also, whenever I intalled video/audio codecs i had to do it again after every reboot . When I tried to play a video a few minutes into playback pc was freezing completely playing a constant audio sound .

I've formatted my hd, reinstalled the system (Win XP pro), but the pc was still freezing while playing video (tried various players) . I tried intalling new drivers/codecs hoping it would help but it didn't . Later I discovered that it also freezes while playing . mp3s, so I figured the problem is with the audio .

There were some videos i was able to play and watch for hours without crashing so I checked those to see what video/audio codecs they were using and compared them with those that cause my pc to freeze . As it turned out, every file that was freezing was using an mp3 codec . I got rid of it and started playing loads of videos for testing purposes . No crash . Two months later still no crash and I was sure I've gotten rid of the problem . . until last night when my videos started freezing again and this time none of them are using an mp3 codec as I don't have one . The freezing started again the moment I uninstalled the XP Codec Pack (i had just the video codecs installed, I needed to remove it temporarily) .

Please help, I'm desperate :(

430577 2006-02-15 06:59:00 Most sound chips will support the mp3 codex, so i therefore believe you have either mobo chipset issues if separate card or driver issue with the on-board chip or both.

i would check the device manager for driver details...are there updated versions, same with the mobo manufacturer.

thats to start with anyway!

430578 2006-02-15 07:06:00 I've updated the sound card drivers soon after the first crash.
As for the mobo, I've been on the same drivers for ages and never had a similar problem until now.

430580 2006-02-15 08:15:00 64mb RAM
Celeron 700

No question marks in the device manager.
I tried almost every player - WMP, Media Player Classic, Winamp, VIPlay, Micro DVD and many others so I don't think that's the issue.

430581 2006-02-15 08:21:00 I would get more ram, for starters, if youre using XP .

64 mb is well below the requirements for XP .

You're most probably running out of memory .

430582 2006-02-15 08:56:00 I've been using it, and watching videos on it for years and this problem only appeared a few months ago. rko (9806)
430583 2006-02-15 08:59:00 I would still get more ram for it, it'll be scraping the hdd soon, once it starts running out of ram.

And slowing things down. And using the hdd as virtual memory.

430584 2006-02-15 08:59:00 are you sure its not a simple case of infection?

what AV, antispyware and firewall do you run on it?

430585 2006-02-15 09:13:00 I check for infections on almost daily basis, when the problem first appeared I scanned hdd with everything i could for viruses, malware etc to make sure. Then when I reinstalled the system I did a (failed) playback test before even going online so I haven't had time to catch any infection. rko (9806)
