430464 2006-02-14 22:43:00 Hey,

My uncle is having issues with his disk space on his desktop computer.
He is running Win XP Pro, and there is actually around 500MB free space. However most times when he boots up his PC, it comes up saying "low disk space of approx 59MB" and he is asked to remove programs etc. Then he goes through this step and cleans up by removing temporary internet files etc, but not actually removing any programs. After this, it says he now has 500MB again??!!
Originally when he had the problem, I went into system restore and reduced this usage to the minimum and this fixed the issue to get him to 500MB free space.

Please help....Why does it keep doing this and how can we stop it as he does actually seem to have enough space. I have added up all folders on the drive etc and he has enough space.

Thanks

430465 2006-02-14 22:46:00 either delete data or get another harddrive. tweak'e (69)
430466 2006-02-14 22:52:00 Or get ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) and get rid of all the crap off the hard drive. Speedy Gonzales (78)
430467 2006-02-14 22:53:00 But like I said.....There IS actually enough space on this disk and therefore no need for a new hard drive. I am looking for a solution to this issue using this hard drive.
Thanks.

430468 2006-02-14 23:08:00 i wouldn't call 500mb enough space. things like temp files, internet temps files, swap file etc will soak it up really quick. btw i think XP dos the low disk space by drive % rather than volume. there is a tweak that turns the warning off. tweak'e (69)
430469 2006-02-14 23:38:00 500mb is FAR TOO LOW for free space on an xp system.......among other things teh 'system restore' function chews up GIGABYTES pretty fast......and so dose the windows 'swap file' space.........he NEEDS a larger harddrive drcspy (146)
430470 2006-02-14 23:47:00 Or turn off hibernation. Speedy Gonzales (78)
430471 2006-02-15 05:20:00 Hey,

Firstly...Thanks so much already for your help and time. I really appreciate it.

From memory, his hard drive is 4 or 5g. I realise that he should have a new hard drive.....But I really can't get the time to reload windows for him again.

I also hear that reducing temporary internet files storage space can help, or reducing page file?? If I am to do this....Does anyone recommend a minimum amount/percentage that I should not go below for these??

Also, how much space will turning off hibernation free up roughly....And how do I do this??

Thanks again.

Go to control panel / power options / hibernate tab. Untick it. It'll show u how much space its using.

430473 2006-02-15 06:09:00 give ccleaner a run through.

swapfile size...its tricky, drop the size down to much and performance suffers. unfortunatly with the way XP works you NEED to run a HUGE swapfile.
